Tim Roach

Head of Learning - Performing Arts

Each year, our Drama Cocurricular Program puts on a short play, usually a comedy. This year, it was a play called Cheque Please, about a series of blind dates which go from bad to worse.

This cocurricular activity is a great opportunity to gain experience on stage performing to an audience, and every year proves to be a highlight of our fantastic Performing Arts calendar. Each of our 22 students in the CCP performed in a duo. They worked hard, learned their lines and did a fantastic job - which was met with excellent feedback from all who came to see the show.

Excitingly, this year the show was directed by three senior students – Elena Caffrey, Cameron Cassidy-Rickard and Josie Coyle, which helped them to not only gain directing experience, but also to help them get to know younger students a little bit better. The Drama CCP runs every Wednesday at lunchtime in the Theatre – all are welcome!

The Drama CCP is up with my favourites and we all look forward to it each week.

Each week  we usually start off by playing a game or two to warm up. Throughout Term 2, we have been working towards a drama performance called Cheque Please, working in small groups (about 3-5 partners in each group) to practice each scene. These groups were run by an older student who helped us practice and show more character. If we finished early, we often got to play another game or two.

Being in Cheque Please was a challenging but really fun experience. Being able to be part of a play really helped me with my confidence with public speaking. It was my first play and I was a little bit nervous, but it was a really rewarding experience.  Mr Roach was extremely encouraging to all of the students taking part and I also gained a good group of friends from all year levels. We had a great sense of achievement performing the play for our family and friends. I would recommend being in the Drama CCP - it's really fun!

Year 9

At 5.00pm, after school, we all met up in the Theatre Space to run a final rehearsal and give final notes. [Before the performance] I remember feeling nervous as my parents were coming and no doubt everyone else's were too!

It was exciting seeing the lights being controlled from the biobox for the first time, operated by Mr Roach. Afterwards my parents told me how much they loved the show as well as how well I did.

For me, it was exciting to play the role of a kleptomaniac; remembering my lines as well as remembering to steal everything on the table. Overall, our drama club's performance of Cheque Please was an exciting experience to go through and a great way to occupy my spare time.
