Teaching and Learning

From Ms McLeod's Desk

PIRLS

On Tuesday 23rd November, 4H took part in the Progress in International Reading Study (PIRLS), conducted onsite at school.

PIRLS is an educational research project investigating student achievement in reading. More than 50 countries, including Australia, are participating in this study that informs how our students in Australia are performing in comparison to their peers in other countries and to compare programs of study and teaching practices. We will be able to obtain current national and international information which will help improve the teaching and learning in reading in our country.

The students in 4H completed two 40-minute sessions that involved reading stories and articles, answering multiple choice questions and completing a questionnaire about their experiences of reading at home and school.

Students were not required to study specifically for the assessment and the results will not affect individual students’ grades or progress in school.

Thank you to Mrs Hastie and her students in 4 H for taking part in this important study.

Semester 2 Reports 2021

As the end of the year approaches fast, our teachers have been working with students to complete assessments and prepare the Semester 2 student reports.

With the disruption caused by the COVID19 pandemic, the Department of Education and Training have adjusted the expectations around student reporting for Semester 2, 2021. Therefore, our reports will look different to the reports previously completed for our students and will focus on progress made during onsite learning and Remote and Flexible Learning.

Reports will include:

  • a general comment about the child’s learning and wellbeing
  • a description of the areas of the Victorian Curriculum taught for English and Mathematics:
  • student achievement information
  • a five-point scale (please note this will not include EAL)
  • progress made since the last time these curriculum areas were reported on (shown on progression dot points)
  • for all other curriculum areas taught
  • a description of what was taught
  • a short comment on progress and achievement across the semester

Students that have not returned to onsite schooling in Term 4, will not receive a progression point in English or Mathematics as authentic student assessment cannot be completed, however, a teacher comment about learning progress will be received.

Reports will be available on the Sentral Parent Portal on Monday 13th December at 3.30pm. If you are having difficulty accessing the portal, please contact the school office on 03 9874 6381.

We expect that our previous model of reporting student progress will return for Semester 1, 2022.
