PUBLIC SPEAKING

Mooting Competition

Year 11 legal students competed in the Bond University Mooting Contest on 7 May at the Southbank Court of Appeals. The team consisted of Senior Council Emma Rockman, Junior Council April Austin and Acting Solicitor Anastasia Misarvidis -Tyshing.  With support from the class, legal principles and how the law was applied, was brought to life in this moot court experience. Students’ knowledge of the law was rigorously tested with judges’ thorough questioning during the submissions. This taste of a real court room situation has inspired students towards further studies of law.

VCAA Plain English Speaking Award

Kew High School Public Speaking development programme provides individually targeted opportunities to develop our senior students’ communications skills. The first and second placegetters of the 2015 Kew High School Senior Public Speaking Contest, Year 11 Student Josephine Lake and Year 12 student Ayisha Alush-Jaggs represented Kew High School in the regional final of the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award on 21 May.

The regional final was hosted by Kew High School in the Renaissance theatre. Our students each competed with a prepared six minute speech. Josephine's speech was titled "Korean Jesus" and was about racism. Ayisha's speech was titled "No excuse" and was about gender equity and violence against women.

The second half of the contest tested the students on their capacity to think on their feet with the impromptu speech section. All students had four minutes to write a three minute speech on the topic, "How will we fix it?"

Our students were among the six competitors who gave exceptional speeches, demonstrating mature exploration of social issues.
