COASTAL AMBASSADORS' PROGRAMME

Phillip Island

In the space of only four days, Montanna Ferry, Florence Honeybun, Rachel Nankin, Kate O’Dwyer, Nevie Peters and Meg Whittle took part in an amazing program that was not only educational, but also inspired us and left us with memories that will last forever. Our focus was to create an ‘Action Plan’ that would aim to improve the environment and the attitude towards it in our local community. However, that’s not all we accomplished.

Throughout the program, we engaged in a variety of environmental-based activities including a rubbish survey, rehabilitating local flora and educating ourselves on the natural wildlife, specifically that native to the Phillip Island region. In addition, we also took part in a range of social activities, like surfing and mountain bike riding. Our teamwork skills were tested and improved greatly while working in not only our Action Plan teams, but also as a part of a mixed-school group. Friendships were created as we were put together with a mixture of students from schools across Victoria. Long-lasting bonds were established as a result. It was a pleasure to share our experience with like-minded people, as it helped us to realize that what we believe in is in fact valid and not completely unreachable.

We are extremely grateful to the Kew High Middle School team for encouraging us to apply - and all the educators at the camp who made this opportunity possible. We learned that when in the right atmosphere, surrounded by the right people, with the right attitude, our hopes and goals for the future can flourish and perhaps become a reality.
