Film in a Day

Last week we had the Year 11 Media class complete their ‘Film in a Day’ School Assessed Task for Unit 2 VCE Media.  The students were given a topic on the Monday and all day Thursday to come up with an innovative film which they had to plan, film and edit in one day.  Students were asked to create their film using the stimulus “You Are Not Alone” which is a project run by the Australian Suicide Prevention Foundation.  This project invited students to get creative, show someone you care and make a short video.

There were five groups of students and five films created by the end of the day which will be shown at the end of the year in our Media film Showcase.  Students now have the option to tweak and amend their films to enter into a competition by the foundation in October.  The students worked exceptionally well throughout the whole day and created some excellent films, of which they should all be proud.  Students also developed invaluable production and post production skills which will assist them in future projects during this area of study and beyond in Media.  I am really proud of all the students in this class as this was a difficult topic to work on and saw students being stretched and pushed outside of their comfort zone.  Well done team! You rock.

Year 9 Media

The year 9 Media class has just finished their first Common Assessment Task called ‘The Timetable film’.  On face value the task sounds really easy, follow the shots and put them together, however students had to pay close attention to continuity and pacing to ensure their films flowed smoothly and that their editing was seamless.  Students worked in groups, were given a storyboard and were instructed what to film.  Each student had to film their own version and then edit their own version so all participants had opportunities to film and edit.

Most students also took part in acting in these films which was quite confronting for some, and excellent fun for others.

Students embedded their shot type skills ensuring that each shot matched the specific shot type and size.  Most students edited in iMovie, which is an excellent editing program that is easy to use while still maintaining a high quality in the finished product.  Other students took the opportunity to edit using the Adobe Premier suite which is equally as effective while having more complex editing processes.  The skills the students have learnt throughout this term will be really helpful for any further presentations they may do in Media while also providing them with some excellent film and editing skills for any personal filming they may wish to do in the future.
