National Tree Planting Day

Students and staff got their hands dirty to help our environment by planting a tree.

In honour of National Tree Planting Day and Schools Tree Day on Friday, 26 and Sunday, 28 July, the students and staff at Doncaster Secondary College decided to get their hands dirty and help our environment by planting a tree!

Many students from multiple year levels came down to plant trees that are, not only native to Australia but are also edible! The design was inspired and designed by our school gardener, Robin who ran the event which was organized by the Green Team.

The students who were involved in the event we're not only able to help our environment but were also able to gain valuable knowledge about nature and gardening while having fun. One student claimed that the event was “a good opportunity to get involved with nature” while another student said that it was a “nice way to contribute to our school environment.”  Another student who participated stated that it was a fun time with friends as they got to “name their plant”, as a few students did. Throughout the event, the students were able to learn how to use new tools and equipment while they discovered new types of plants and what is involved in the process of planting a tree.

In addition to gaining knowledge, the event was an exceptionally rewarding experience by not only allowing the students to feel good about themselves for helping our environment but, by also providing an opportunity to have fun with friends and doing something different from the usual lunchtime activities. The members of the Green Team were overjoyed with the number of students who came, smiling and excited with one of the members of the Green Team stating that “so many people came and learnt new things about gardening and the importance of it for our planet”. The event was a massive success which did not only provide a fun and new learning experience but also a way to help our planet.

We would like to thank all of the students who came to support us in saving the environment and the staff who helped to make our tree planting event possible, especially Robin and Ms McGee. We would like to express the excitement we had upon seeing so many enthusiastic members of our school community working together to make such a simple task so worthwhile.

We hope to see you all soon at our next event!
