Getting involved with the Music Program

On Monday, 12 August, three newly arrived international students, Nancy Ren, Jordan Wang, and Oliver Wang met with Mr Dean in the music centre during recess.

These students are really keen to get involved with the DSC Music Program. Spending their recess testing out different musical instruments, they really made the most of their time discovering how they may be able to make a significant contribution to the Music Program.

International Student Public Speaking Competition

Recently, two of our international students, Franchesca L. 10A and Berry E. 8F represented the College at the International Student Public Speaking Competition held at Northcote High School.

How did the staff here at DSC help you to prepare for the event?

Not only the teachers but also my classmates were very encouraging and supportive. My EAL teacher, the International Student Coordinator, the Debate & Public Speaking Coordinator really prepared me for the event.

My first draft of the speech was a total disaster. Most of my arguments were ambiguous and quite lengthy. However, with the help of the DSC teachers, I could not only improve my script but also gain valuable lessons for conducting an oral presentation. Ms Martin, in particular, helped me to change my work. Her feedback helped me to see what I could improve on, and what I could do more to make the whole speech look much better. I would like to thank Ms Martin for supporting me and for spending so much time helping me to prepare for the event.

What did you learn from participating in this event?

It was an honour for me to represent Doncaster Secondary College. During the event not only did I learn the true definition of the topic “knowledge is power”, but I also realised that we had varying perspectives on the topic. There were sixteen speakers from eight different schools and each of the participants presented a different viewpoint and I found each of them to be so inspiring. After the competition, a few Principals from different schools gave me positive feedback. I also had a few students from different high schools compliment me on my speaking skills, which I found really encouraging. I would say that this was what made the competition so memorable for me!

Prior to this event, I believed that speeches were basically essays read aloud. So my initial speech too long and overly complicated. I now understand that delivering a speech does require specific skills and approaches that are quite different from writing an essay. Therefore, this has set a cornerstone for my desire to improve my speaking skills. I learned that confidence and enthusiasm, along with body language and voice level are crucial in effectively persuading an audience. I was able to learn some really valuable lessons that will help me to improve my English. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me - Ms Martin, for giving me sincere feedback and to Ms Huang, for being a voice of encouragement and motivation, and lastly, to my year 8 friends who always helped me to hold onto my smile.

Multicultural 'Resuscitate a Mate'

More than twenty international students participated in the ‘Multicultural Resuscitate (riˈsəsəˌtāt ) a Mate’ seminar. It was the first time, they learned what CPR is and how to perform it in an emergency.

“I think most people in the world should know what CPR is and how to perform it. It might mean one day we have the opportunity to save the life of a friend. I think it was good that we got the chance to learn CPR.”

Kirash L. 8L

“The whole class was very interesting. I learned a lot. I would love it if the school could organise more activities like this so that we can learn more about these topics.”

Frank W. 8L

“This session is very useful, I hope that everyone knows how to do CPR, but I also hope that they will never be able to use it.”
