Senior School

2019 Melbourne International Film Festival Excursion

The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) excursion was a great opportunity for our senior Chinese students to learn more about Chinese culture and language. By going out to this event altogether, our year 10 Chinese students also had the opportunity to speak with the VCE Chinese students and were able to share information about their Chinese studies. Everyone behaved exceptionally well and really demonstrated our school values, especially respect and responsibility in public.

As a group consisting of the year 10, 11 and 12 Chinese classes, we went into the city to see a movie in Chinese. We first went to China Town, where we had recess before walking to the cinema to see the film. The movie was called 'Long Time No Sea' and was about a boy, from Orchid Island in Taiwan, who didn't see his father much. The story also followed a young man on his journey to becoming a teacher at the boy's primary school. The teacher organised for the kids to compete in a traditional dancing competition in Kaohsiung. Over the course of the movie, the young man becomes a father figure for the boy. The film was interesting, and I learned a lot about traditional Taiwanese culture, especially about the traditional dances. I was also given some insight into what it would be like to grow up on a small island. After that, we went to Melbourne Central for lunch before catching a bus home.

Last Friday, the year 10 and 12 Chinese classes adventured into the city as a collective. The first stop was China Town, where we indulged in morning tea while experiencing the Melbourne side of Chinese Culture. We then set off to watch ‘Long Time No Sea’. The storyline followed a young boy on an island whose father worked in Taiwan. He stayed with his grandmother and his uncle. His mother was not seen or mentioned throughout the whole film. There were long amounts of time from when his father would visit and the young boy would get very sad and lonely. He still managed to have fun and make friends with his school peers, teachers and tourists visiting the island. This movie made me realise how privileged I am to see both of my parents every single day!
