Weather Presentations - Year 1

To support their Unit of Inquiry 'How the World Works - The weather affects our lives and environment', last week the Year One students were lucky enough to have Agnes Lane (Ellen's mum from 1D) talk to them about the weather and how it impacts our lives. Agnes leads the Observing Strategy team in the Data Program at the Bureau of Meteorology and as a STEM Ambassador in the Bureau, she has a particular interest in outreach activities that promote STEM in schools.

Agnes discussed how weather affects what we do such as our activities, jobs and food. She talked out how they gather the information about weather at the Bureau of Meteorology and the instruments they use. The Year One students really learnt a lot from her PowerPoint presentation and appreciated her coming and talking to them!

On Wednesday, Ellen's Mum came in to talk to us about the weather. She works at the Bureau of Meteorology. We learnt we can make a tornado in a bottle. She made a PowerPoint on the whiteboard. Australia never gets tornadoes, rain is 8 millimetres in size. I learnt that a tropical cyclone wrecks so many houses. We looked at BOM for today and today is partly cloudy.

On Wednesday, Ellen's Mum came into the classroom to talk to us about weather. My favourite thing she talked about was when she talked about tropical cyclones. It was very interesting, I was amazed. I also loved how she talked about the floods. I loved it. She also showed us how to make a tornado in a bottle. It was cool.

Persuasive Writing - Year 1

To support their 'How the World Works - The weather affects our lives and environment' Unit of Inquiry, the Year One students have been learning the structure of a persuasive text and wrote about their favourite season to try and convince others of their opinion. They had to provide several supporting details as to why they thought their season was the best.

Winter is better than spring because you can go to the snow. When you're at the snow you can ski. It is my birthday in winter! In spring you can't ski. That is why winter is better than spring.

Ella-Rose F (1A)

Spring is better than winter because in spring you can go to the beach on a sunny holiday. The flowers smell so good and fresh. It doesn't get too hot or too cold. In winter you can't go to the beach.

Ayva K (1B)

My favourite season is summer. I like summer because I get to go the beach with my family and I get to play lots of games with my sister and Dad and I hug my dog. What I love most is getting icy poles and ice creams too. When it's summer I just want to party and I like going to the park. The most important thing about summer is to have fun!

Ryder P (1C)

My favourite season is spring. I think spring's the best season because you can see all the animals. You can also see the flowers bloom. It is nice and warm.

Elm U (1D)

My favourite season is summer. You can have ice cream and go to the beach and watch the sunset! You can swim in a pool and do amazing tricks! When you watch the sunset you can think of all the great things you did.
