Senior School News

Welcome to the students, families and staff of Senior School 2021 and a special welcome to our new students. As the new school year commences, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce the Senior School Team:

Senior School Leader: Jeff Micallef

Year 10 Coordinators: Sarah Mortimer & Karen Eap

Year 11 Coordinator: Daniel Mulligan

Year 12 Coordinator: Laura Brancatella

Careers and Pathways Coordinator: Heather Palm

 VASS Coordinator: Meaghan Garnham

We are really looking forward to working with students this year. We realise that learning remotely last year did not work perfectly for all students or even for all topics. Some students will have gaps that are explained by the difficulties of last year. I encourage all parents to speak to your children to ensure they communicate well with their teachers and with the Senior School to ensure that these areas are addressed.

Our goal is about giving students at Glen Eira College the best chance of achieving successful outcomes from their Senior School years. In doing this we aim to continue to set high expectations that we are confident our students can reach.

A reminder that all VCE subjects consist of outcomes. To pass a subject the student must pass ALL outcomes. This is generally done through SACs (school assessed coursework) or SATs (school assessed tasks). If a student does not pass a SAC they will usually be required to sit a SAC redemption the following Tuesday after school. This will enable them to receive an S for the topic.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact myself or someone in the Senior School Team.

Year 11 News

Firstly I would like to extend a warm welcome to 2021 at GEC for both returning and new Year 11 students.

Hopefully you were able to enjoy quality time with family and friends over the summer holidays after a challenging year.

My focus as year level coordinator for this year will be on promoting and caring for student wellbeing, and ensuring students are given the best possible chance to reach their full potential while at the college. To achieve this I will be working closely with the head of Senior School, Mr Jeff Micallef, and the Pathways Coordinator, Ms Heather Palm.

This is a really important year in your schooling journey, and the work put in this year will impact performance and readiness for Year 12. I look forward to working with students and their families to make 2021 a successful year.

Year 11 Coordinator

Year 12 News

The start of the year has been busy for all Year 12 students and I am pleased to see that students have adapted well to the change to a fortnightly timetable. Students have been completing verification tests in each subject to assess their level of understanding of the knowledge and skills that they acquired whilst completing the holiday homework.  SACs will commence soon.

The Year 12 Executive Committee has been chosen and congratulations to the successful applicants: Ishawarya Polisetti, Gabi Voges, Dhugal Leathley, Georgia Wood-Freeman, Jenna Casamento and of course the college captains and vice captains, who have been busy organising the year 12 study centre and kitchen.  The Year 12 Formal is being organised and this event will be held on 11th March 2021 at Merrimu Receptions.

A reminder that VCAA special examination arrangements are due on 1st April 2021.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at the college if you have any queries about Year 12 matters.
