International Women’s Day – Tuesday 8th March

Happy International Women’s Day from all of us in the Student Services Wellbeing team. International Women’s Day is celebrated all around the world. This day is particularly meaningful to our team who have the great pleasure, and privilege, of working with our next generation of women thinkers, leaders, and advocates.

This year the United Nations celebrates International Women’s Day with a focus on gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow and a commitment to advancing gender equality in the context of climate change, which disproportionately impacts women and girls globally.

Students who are interested in social justice might like to consider joining Northcote High School’s Feminist Collective (FemCo) or Green Team (who focus on the environment and sustainability). Scroll down for more information on these (and many more!) student clubs.

Coping with bad news

In the last fortnight it has been hard to escape bad news. There has been extensive coverage of the devastating floods in New South Wales alongside Russia's brutal attack on Ukraine. Combined with over two years of living through COVID, it is understandable that some people are feeling overwhelmed or hopeless at the moment. Many of us have friends, family and loved ones who have been touched by these crises. For those of us who don't have a personal connection, the faces and stories that are beamed into our living rooms, newsfeeds and daily conversations can make the news stories seem equally close to home.

While it's normal to dwell on the impact these crises are having on the individuals who have been immediately impacted, it's also completely normal to feel upset, worried, and stressed, even from the safety of our own home and lives. Reach Out have put together this helpful resources to support families to cope with bad world news. It includes information on why we are all affected by bad news and how we can respond if it is making us feel down.

Students who feel particularly stressed or overwhelmed by these world events are encouraged to check-in with a member of the Student Wellbeing team for a chat and support. See below to learn how you can connect with us.
