Term 1

AFL/AFLW

The AFL/AFLW program are very excited to welcome some new members:

Mikaylee Smee (Central Coast)

Isaiah Harrison (Newcomb Secondary College)

Edan Ibbetson (Williamstown)

Corey Grant (Wyndham)

Layla Burr (General program)

All football coaches are extremely happy with how all students have embraced the new year and tried their best at the fitness testing they have been undertaking. During the week all year levels were involved in a repeat effort circuit which required them to participate in three rounds of:

Push up hold for 1 min, shuttle runs for 1 min and 4 v 6 repeat shape drill for 2 minutes. It was great to hear and see the way the Year 10 students encouraged each other to keep going when it was getting hard to sustain the level of intensity required, especially in the heat of Wednesday afternoon.

Rhianan Woods remarked after the circuit that she is really enjoying being part of this group and the best aspects of the program are meeting people with the same passion, being included by the boys, and competing in an equal playing environment.

Basketball

In this newsletter edition, the basketball program would like to congratulate and acknowledge Tanielle Knight Yr.12 on her selection in the U20 Victorian State Team competing at the Australian National Championships which will take place in Mackay this April. Talking with Tanielle about this selection she was very excited about the opportunity and was looking forward to getting to know her new teammates. After moving to Wyndham Basketball Association and signing on to play in their Big V Championship Women’s team this season, Tanielle spoke about how much she is enjoying the intensity of the program and the support she has received from the Head Coach, Gerard Hillier.  Tanielle is pursuing the US college basketball pathway and has already received some interest from college coaches.

Netball

The Netball Program is flying and the girls are off and running. After settling in the first couple of weeks we have moved through fitness testing last week which has given all an indication of our starting point as we set goals for the term ahead.

Our sessions at Corio Leisure Centre have been a mix of agility, ball work, learning foundations of court craft and match play.

All have been very enthusiastic. As you can see in the image below working on their best game face also.

The next few weeks will have a focus on understanding and playing your role on court learning various positions and also foundation attacking skills.

I can’t wait to see the girls in action.

Other Sporting News:

Special mention this week to Jackson Unthank (Yr.10) who competed in the Victorian State Track and Field Championship U16 Men 1500m last weekend and finished 5th with a time of 4:17.55. Jackson will be competing in the 800m event this weekend, best of luck Jackson!

Once again we congratulate Zander Bailey, who is a member of the Basketball program and is continuing his great form on the river. He has increased his winning streak of the MU151X to six!!  Zander won his Yr 8/9 single scull in Geelong Saturday with a convincing win over his competitors. He then backed up Saturday's performance in Nagambie with a win in the U15 single scull final, and coming a close third in the Men’s C grade scull final on Sunday.

Western Heights were chosen by Rowing Australia to be one of ten pilot schools in Australia to undertake an indoor rowing program. The school will receive a Concept 2 rowing machine, entry for ten students to compete in the National Indoor Rowing Championships later this year and will receive a visit from a rowing Olympian to help introduce the program.
