Study for Success day

On Thursday, Year 11 students were visited by special guest speakers from Deakin University and the WHC Class of 2021, to help them make the most of their year.

We started the day by welcoming back Bridie Connor for a Q&A with the VCAL class. Bridie came to WHC in Year 11 and started in VCE, before changing course to VCAL to follow her childhood dream of becoming a hairdresser.

Bridie told the students how the VCAL program allowed her to complete her Certificate II and III in Hairdressing and gain valuable skills and work contacts for her future. She also shared some ideas for staying organised and motivated, dealing with setbacks, goal-setting and maintaining a healthy balance. At the end of the session, she was presented with an iPad in recognition of her achievements as VCAL Dux 2021.

After lunch, the Unit 1 VCE students from Years 10 and 11 gathered for a Study for Success and alumni presentation. Students from Deakin University began by getting students to identify their fears and cheers as they approach their senior studies then spoke about multitasking, study spaces, how we learn best, memory and the forgetting curve. They also offered first hand insight into studying, future pathways and University life. The session was engaging and extremely relevant as our Year 10 and 11 students begin their VCE learning journey.

Following the Deakin presentation, we finished the day with a VCE Q&A with Tiana Prodanov, former school co-captain and alumni captain. Tiana drew on her experiences as a recent VCE student, school leader and keen sportsperson to pass on some valuable advice, such as how to juggle multiple priorities, build resilience and handle stress.

Thank you to our alumni Bridie and Tiana for making the time to come back and give back to the current students! We wish them all the best for the year ahead. Thank you also to the Deakin University team for their insights into study strategies.
