Cultural Liaison News

Thousands of households had been affected by the volcanic eruption and tsunami that hit the islands of Tonga.  About 84,000 of the population had been affected by the disaster.

Communities in Tongatapu have been identified as having suffered significant damage to households in coastal areas. Around 31 houses are completely damaged, 72 severely, 46 moderately, and 23 suffered minor damage. There were serious concerns about access to safe water and the quality of groundwater.

Friday, 25th February 2022, our school community was able to fundraise to help our pacific nation 'The Kingdom of Tonga' to raise enough funds to supply the necessary essentials for the people of Tonga. The staff and students wore red, to symbolise the Tongan flag with a gold coin donation as well as selling cupcakes, sausage sizzle, traditional pacific foods, desserts and the famous Tongan 'otai' drink.

Our fundraising event was a success, with the help and support of our students, teachers, and local businesses who donated their time and efforts in making a variety of delicious pacific foods and a large Tongan flag cake from Vaccaris bakery, Avanna Polynesian, Uoifalelahi Family,  Mina's finger food Catering, Mrs. Lale and Mr. Samoa Lole and plenty of red cupcakes baked by our very own year 10, 11 and 12 students.

Our tally for the Tonga Fundraiser was just over $2,100.00, which was a great effort. The people in Tonga wish to pass on their heartfelt thanks to the staff and students who have supported them from Australia. The funds raised will be sent to Caritas Australia to help with essentials they need for survival:  food, bottled water, sanitation supplies, and shelter.

Caritas Australia would like to thank you for your kindness and generosity to raise money for their Tonga Pacific Appeal Emergency Fund.
