News from the Chicken Coop

Chicken Roster

Many thanks to the families who have taken such good care of our chickens so far and to all the families who have volunteered for the rest of the term.

We are now calling for volunteers during the next school holidays. specifically from 11-19 and 23-25 April. You can choose how many days you would like to do, 3 or 4 days in a row would be ideal. Chicken Duty involves letting the chooks out of their coop in the mornings and putting them away in the evenings, checking that they have enough water each day and feeding them as needed. Occasional cleaning out of chicken manure will also be required. Your reward is wonderful fresh eggs. You will be sent an information sheet with all the details you need.

Please email Melinda Kerwin mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preferred dates if you are interested in being added to the roster.

Egg Lotto

Thank you to everyone who has been buying tickets in our fortnightly Egg Lotto.

All the money we make is put back into the keeping of the chickens for buying food and other resources. We have just reached the point where the chickens are now paying for themselves, it’s so exciting!

The next Egg Lotto draw will be next Monday 28 March at assembly. There will be several dozen eggs available to win so get your $1 raffle ticket soon. Students can buy tickets in the Passive Play area most mornings or ask someone in the 5/6 rooms. The Environment Leaders will also be out in front of the school on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15-3:30pm to sell to parents.

Egg cartons

Thanks to all those who have brought in egg cartons, we now have a very healthy supply that will last quite a while, so, no more egg cartons until further notice.

Did you know?

Keeping eggs at room temperature or in the refrigerator is a personal preference and is also influenced by climate. If you live in warm climates like far North Queensland, it is better to refrigerate your eggs so they can maintain their quality. For those of us living in cooler climates our moderate temperatures allow for eggs to be stored at room temperature. Either way, eggs from the coop will keep fresh for 4-6weeks without any real decline in egg quality. Enjoy!

Thanks for your support!
