Kaboom Percussion - Whole School Incursion

On Friday 18th March, all St. John’s students were treated to a fun filled and noisy incursion from Kaboom Percussion. Laura and Nathan took us on a journey as they explored how they can make sounds and rhythm patterns using everyday objects. They used soft drink bottles to play movie classics and we had to guess the songs, they told stories using our students to help with roles while playing buckets and bins to create an interesting soundtrack. They taught us 'Call and Response' where we would listen to the rhythm pattern and then using our own bodies would perform it back to them. Plastic piping tubes in different sizes could also be played with a bat to create different notes. We even used ‘Jazz Hands’ and a moody pose at the end of each performance. This interactive performance was a huge success and all students left with a big smile on their faces and a different beat in their feet.

Anzac Day Dawn Service

St John’s has been invited to take part in the Whitehorse Anzac Day Service at Halliday Park, on Monday 25 April (the last day of the school holidays). Last year the Choir attended and sang the song 'Here you lie' and this year we thought that we would open this invitation up to all students.

Students have been learning the song 'Here You Lie' in Performing Arts classes, which was written by Mark Puddy for Arts Alive. This song commemorates the centenary of the arrival of the ANZACs at Gallipoli on 25 April.

Students who attend the Service will need to be accompanied by a parent and will need to meet at the Clock Tower at 5.40am, wearing their school uniform. We will stand together as a group, quietly and respectfully, to sing and take part in the whole service. At the conclusion of the service students will return to their parents. This year the date coincides with the end of the school holidays so please mark a reminder in your calendar, if you would like to attend. We will send out a reminder beforehand. I have included the lyrics to the song and a version I found on Youtube. You may like to rehearse over the holidays.

HERE YOU LIE  written by Mark Puddy for Arts Alive

Here you Lie Song

In the still of the night

Gripping knuckles turning white

As you're drawn towards the unknown like a moth to the light.

Shattered peace in the night

Canons roaring, blinding bright

Being pulled towards the battle

By whose side will you fight?

CHORUS

Here you lie, side by side

Here you fight, but not for glory

Here you lie, side by side

Here you lie here you fight side by side.

As the sun fades away

In the distance all is grey

As the sky heed no more

All is done end of day

Wipe away every tear

For your children, have no fear

For your sons and your daughters

Have become family here.

Here you lie, side by side

Not to die but live forever

Here you lie side by side

Here you lie here you fight side by side

Here you lie here you died, side by side.
