From the Senior Sports Master
This weekend sees the conclusion of our Summer Sports Program with District Cricket finals weekend, our ISA 2nd XI playing their final round of cricket against St Augustine's College, NSTA Tennis in finals mode and Basketball having completed their ISA Season last weekend. The only exception to this is our Squash players who have one final round before finals in the Pennants Competition.
Good luck to all those in finals and thank you to all who have been involved in the Summer Program. It hasn't been easy but fortune definitely favours the brave.
As Summer draws to a close we are now planning our Winter Program and I would ask that you complete Winter registrations in the respective sports at your very earliest opportunity, noting that Tennis and Football Registrations are now closed. For your urgent attention is the need for boys to register for Rugby.
The information you provide directly affects coaching allocations for each sport.
Mr Matt Stearn - Senior Sports Master

Finally, thanks to all players, parents and supporters for your patience over the course of a tricky season. Staffing and player absences have presented a significant problem, and school withdrawals have also created problems.

SPX Match Summary
Round 13 - 12/3/22
Match Reports
U13/1 'make hay while sun shines' - literally!
We turned up to David Thomas Reserve, that had been flooded earlier I think week, knowing we had a lot of raking to do. The ground had been freshly mowed, but the blanket of clippings was an inch thick.
Thank you to the army of St Pius X and Wakehurst parents and players who put in for over an hour. We made hay!
SPX won the toss and batted, despite the outfield, always bat first in a semi final.
We lost 2 wickets in the first over, before recovering and building to drinks. We then faltered again before recovering again. Our healthy score of 132 included scores of 37 from Harry Arnold, 19 each from Jared Fernandez and Zac Rapa and a great 24 from Alex Burke. Alex even put a 6 on the roof of our tent.
Other than a couple of catches that were dropped SPX were sharp in the field. Our two run-outs were a master class. This backed some very tight bowling. Wickets to Brody Mendel (2) and Darcy Horstead, Zac Rapa, Rohan Jackson and Jared (1 each).
Our effort was topped with an amazing running catch by Zac and Jared’s absolute hanger to remove a bullet above his head with his right hand. Wakehurst all out for 48.
The boys know there are elements to work on before next weekend’s Grand Final against the mighty Collaroy side.
The boys last act was to thank the farmers, and celebrate the win, with a rousing rendition of Woodchatta!

Season wind up
Due to ground availability (or lack thereof), it seems like we face another abrupt end to the season. Shame about the weather these past few weeks, but we have plenty to smile about. Firstly, thank you to all your support throughout 2021/22 – fielding an U16s team is never easy, and the volunteers really do serve as the foundation of the team. Thank you in particular to Tony and Steve for picking up the Manager’s duties – anyone who has had to enter post-match scores on a Saturday deserves a round of applause each week. Congratulations also go to our Year 12s, Nick Green, Andrew Guerrera, Will Harper, Liam Hunt, Justin Park, Ben Purcell and Aiden Wilson for surviving the trials and tribulations of Thursday net and fielding sessions, and serving as a core group throughout their time here at SPX Cricket. Interesting stat for the year – we have the lowest total for runs scored against a team at 594 runs. The next best team is Peninsula with 702. Truly a great effort from the boys! If anyone has any photos of the team during the season, could you please send it to the group via Whatsapp? We will try to squeeze as many into the Collegian Report for the year. Thanks again for a great season. See you all around! Kind Regards, Ryan

NSTA Tennis
Another fantastic day at Talus St was had by all. With 6 Pius vs Pius matches in the 8.00 am session there was good healthy competition and a lot of friendly banter to be seen and heard. Thank you to Richard Gauci, Alex Vaccher, Ethan Li, Riley Seeto and Andrew McKinnon for coming early to help umpire the earlier matches.
Thanks also must go to Nicholas Kwan, Justin Lee, Marcus Ulevik, Sebastian Dal Molin and Venedict Valerio who stepped up to play for other teams. With so many absences each week, it has been a challenge but all boys have taken it in their stride and have been more than happy to help out which has made my job so much easier. Thank you also to the parents for any last-minute changes that have been made to their Saturday schedules.
The highlight match of the weekend had to have been between Edward Yangoyan and his opponent from Redlands. Eddie played a fantastic singles which ended in a nail-biting tie-break that he won 8-6. Even Mr and Mrs Couani who came to pay us a visit were captivated by the standard of play.
Well done to all players for the season, we have one more week to go where ALL teams will be involved in the finals and play offs this Saturday, 19 March. Please keep your eye on the draw to see where you will be playing.

Senior Swimming
Last Wednesday the Senior Swimming squad competed at the ISA Carnival at SOPAC. The Junior Division came 8th, the Intermediate Division came 3rd by only 7 points and the Senior Division came 7th. This gave us 7th overall out of 18 schools.
The highlights of the day were all the Personal Bests achieved by a lot of the boys, as well as Nicholas Gladen breaking an ISA record in the 50m Backstroke. I congratulate all the boys who all swam their best. Thank you to Mr Stearn and Mr Mulheron for assisting on the day and the parents who came to support the team.
The ISA squad is currently being chosen to swim at the CIS. All students will be notified in the coming days.
