National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence / Harmony Day
This Friday our student leaders will conduct Assembly to celebrate Harmony Day acknowledge the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, and our inclusive acceptance of cultural difference and diversity. These important messages will be extended into next week in Pastoral Care time and Wellbeing Wednesday.
All students are invited to bring a coin to the Canteen area next Tuesday 22/3/22 to purchase an Orange Squelch ice block (the theme colour of Harmony Day) so that we can continue the themes of Peace, Respectful Relationships and Harmony amongst all people and nations beyond just one week!
National Close the Gap Day coincides with St Patrick's Day -17th March
The purpose of this day, which has been running since 2006, is to highlight the health inequalities many First Nations people experience and the health gap that exists with non-Indigenous people in Australia. This campaign advocates for Australians to become educated in this space and voice their concerns to local government and health officials. It is a different campaign to the government’s Closing the Gap strategy where there has been minimal progress over the years.
Epidemiologists concur that this equity gap exists. To further educate yourself however, you are invited to click on the following link. The first provides some context to the actual Close the Gap Day and what it is about - National Close the Gap Day FAQ | ANTaR
On a less serious note Happy St Patrick’s Day to all tomorrow.
Year 10 Cultural games - Fencing, Wheelchair Basketball, Gaelic Football and Hurling
Certainly our Year 10 students upheld the values of Harmony and St Patrick's Days at Oxford Falls yesterday during PDHPE, enjoying a “cultural games” session including Gaelic Football, Hurling, Wheelchair Basketball and Fencing.
Old Boys vs Students Gala Day
Despite the wet weather and drainage preventing our Football and Touch/Rugby Old Boys vs Students matches proceeding last Sunday we were able to proceed with a highly entertaining basketball match in which the students came from behind to defeat their Coach Danny Garrett’s Old boys V 72-67 in extra time.
The match featured a host of 3 pointers from Bailey Perkins, James Shahinian, Chris Zilifian (2022), Jack Garrett (2019) Harry Clay (2016) and Liam Calleja (2015). Talls Matt Watts (21) and James Brannan (15) controlled the paint while Will Wylie (21) worked hard across the court.
Our 1st V were represented with great distinction by Ollie Aylmer, Isaac Byrne and Tom Dixon.
Thank you to Old Boys President Jeff Clarke (Class of 1986) and his son Hunter (Class of 2020) who manned the BBQ.
Once the wet weather settles and the fields dry out we hope to hold Mr Quilty’s 1st XI and Old Boys XI Football and Touch Rugby including our Opens Rugby Squad against an Old Boys squad featuring SPX and Waverley College Old Boys joining forces as St Pius CBOBs Brothers Rugby Club.
Any recent Old Boys who would like to play with the Old Boys in the upcoming 7s or short 15 a-side season should contact sbrannan@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au or Brothers Rugby Club Sydney.
Soroptomists International Fundraiser led by SPX connections
Carrying on our Week 6 Theme from International Women’s Day, it was pleasing to spend Saturday night with many SPX connections at Forestville Memorial Hall where a Soroptomists International Trivia Night raised funds for causes including:
The Burdekin Institute Northern Beaches supporting women sadly affected by domestic violence,180 Towards Zero and The Northern Rivers and NW Sydney Flood Appeals.
College Captain Will Staber led a table of young men from St Pius X Year 12 and 11 at the event. The local branch of this Charity is led by Mrs Mel Sheather (Mum to Ollie, Class of 2020, and Josh in Year 11). It was introduced by another good friend of the College in Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan.
Pleasing to note that our 1st XI Cricketer and House Captain Harry O’Brien won the cricket kit for knowing Shane Warne’s middle name! Trivia and women’s support networks were the real winners!

Vaping Support
Please find below a highly informative link to an interview on vaping among school students between Catholic Schools NSW Wellbeing Officer Ms Jenni Coen and National Drug and Alcohol Research Council leader Mr Paul Dillon.
While the novel attraction of this combination of technology and risk taking appears to have abated, the health concerns for those addicted or continuing to use these chemicals as the body and lungs develop and grow are significant and real. Hopefully credible sources of information such as this interview can promote informed conversations and positive decision making around the trends of drug use in our communities.
