Year 9 Science Safety Poster Competition

As part of the Year 9 Science curriculum, students were tasked with creating a science safety poster and entering it into our Year 9 Science Safety Poster Competition. Posters needed to highlight the most important rules and precautions that keep us all safe when in the science labs. Thank you to all the students who submitted wonderful posters - we loved every single entry! It was a challenging task for Ms. Goodridge-Kelly and the Science Faculty to choose our top posters, considering all the effort and creativity that was put into every submission.

Senior Tennis

Congratulations to both the Senior Girls and Senior Boys for winning at the Wyndham Division Tournament on the 24th March at Saltwater Reserve. The Senior Girls won both their matches against Tarneit Senior and Werribee Secondary College. The boys won all six matches against Werribee and they also defeated Tarneit Senior. We wish both teams every success at the Western Metropolitan Region Finals.

Ms Guastella and Mr Wright.

Intermediate Tennis

The boys displayed excellent sportsmanship and won many of their games. The girls won against Tarneit which resulted in a final between Suzanne Cory and Werribee, where SCHS won all 6 matches. We wish Tvisha, Supriya, Sherine, Hillary, Wendy and Bhargavi the best of luck in the Western Metropolitan Region Finals.

Inter School Volleyball Season 2022

Proud is an understatement when writing this article for this Term’s newsletter. I was honoured to witness the amazing talent, passion and dedication of every member in our school’s Volleyball teams who competed in Inter School Volleyball this Term. All of our Volleyballers trained hard every Friday after school and they have definitely upskilled in such a short amount of time, under the guidance of our dedicated 2021 Valedictorian and Volleyball Coach, Charlie Vu.

Our Intermediate Boys, Intermediate Girls and Senior Girls all made it to semi-finals this year. Congratulations to everyone on these teams for all your hard work thus far! A special mention to Brandon G (B6), Alesha P (C6) and Enuri K (K8) who were voted Most Valuable Player by Jim their team members.

Lastly, a very special shout-out to our Senior Boys Volleyball Team. Their dedication to training and passion for Volleyball is reflected in the talent, skill and sportsmanship I have witnessed on the court. Our Senior Boys Volleyball Team won the Wyndham Region Grand Final and is going to compete in Regionals in Term 2! Wish them luck! And I don’t mean to brag, but I just wanted to point out that our Senior Boys only lost one set at Inter School that day and it was during the Grand Final - straight sets for days! Special mention also to Brendan N (R7) who was voted Most Valuable Player by his team members. Keep it up everyone!

Interschool Intermediate Baseball 2022

Once again, the Wyndham Division baseball tournaments were early on in the year, and we had two baseball teams out and playing on the same day, necessitating a great feat of organisation and equipment sharing as we moved between games and diamonds. Despite a team being quickly put together in the lunchtimes leading up to the day and most of the boys never having played the sport before, the boys did a tremendous job of applying the rules and tactics learned. They were patient at the plate, working the count and drawing walks, stole bases at every opportunity and swiped home plate on missed plays, tallying up the runs. In the field they worked hard to hold runners and throw to the right base. Although there is still plenty of scope for improvement, the boys made outstanding progress with learning particular positions and which other players they had to cover and work with.

Superstar Srikar was back leading the team, putting in a Herculean effort to catch the first game and pitch the second. His experience and leadership made a huge difference to our green team. The school also picked up a great free agent at Year 10, bringing in ace pitcher Zayan. Zayan made an extraordinary effort pitching game 1, and was all over the diamond, covering any base needed and there at home plate for the tag if the catcher was chasing a ball. Ramika was a rock at first base, catching every throw over and notching up the outs. He was a revelation at the plate, smashing some huge hits and batting in a number of runs. Sam, Mahin, Hargun and Rohan learned rapidly in the infield, ready to tag stray runners and hold them on base. Hargun did a brilliant job batting as leadoff hitter, getting on base and setting an example for the rest of the team with sneaky stealing and heads up baserunning. Liam controlled the outfield at centre and also was extremely clever at the plate, always working his way onto base and giving a textbook lesson in stealing. Agan, Sajid and Sid fielded very well the outfield and dutifully backed up the basemen, and Bilal contributed with some big hits. Hamdaan took on catching duties in Game 2, doing a great job behind the plate. Rama was incredibly helpful in organising the team and equipment and keeping up morale in the dugout.

In their first game, the team came up against a very strong Manor Lakes outfit containing several club players and unfortunately came up just short of the magnificent come from behind victory. However, the boys put several runs on the board and gained valuable experience. In their second game, against The Grange, they romped to an easy victory. A big thank you to the senior players who took on the base coaching roles in the two games and to parent Mr Ian Mitchell for running the training and warm up session.

Interschool Senior Baseball 2022

Picking the senior team this year was a monumental task, with many players who had contributed to SCHS teams in recent years trying out and a very strong wave of Year 11 students. As a result several extremely skilled players had to miss the cut due to the high numbers of enthusiastic students hoping to play. (If you missed out, don’t forget to come back and try out for Hockey, and hopefully we can get you on the team!) The team quickly gelled. Jordan controlled the game expertly from behind home plate and Aaron and Noah fielded beautifully at the corners. The co-ordination in the field was excellent, with centre infielders Rudra, Jash and Joel working together to cover second and get the ball to Aaron’s steady glove to secure the out at first. Arnav, Paarth, Vansh and backup catcher Sathwik patrolled the outfield. Kavin helped out covering a valuable innings on the mound before Taha stepped in to relief pitch. After hitting a few batters! he found his rhythm and was soon raining down the strikes and collecting the outs. In the final inning captain Paarth took over on the mound as closer and the stinging fastballs proved the end for a valiant Manor Lakes team.

Although Manor Lakes, behind a skilful and experienced catcher, took the early lead, once the SCHS hitters got their eye in at the plate and Manor Lakes brought on their relievers, the runs started adding up, and SCHS took the lead and soon ran away with it. Vansh was never going to let the team stay behind in the run count, revving up the team with his exhortation that the game must not be his last game of baseball at SCHS. The team responded. Noah smashed some of the biggest hits of the day and cleanup hitter Jordan could always be relied upon to clear the bases when he had an at-bat. In his first game of baseball, Taha left us agape with a massive grand slam home run which made the difference on the scoresheet. Jaidyn and Kalindu helped with the warmups and encouragement and will be much needed for Round 2, with SCHS winning its way through to the Western Met Finals for an incredible ninth year in a row. Zayan will get the call up to join the pitching staff at the senior WMR tournament in May. The team has been turning up and training hard twice a week and we wish them good luck!
