Student Services : Careers

A big welcome to all our new students and families, and welcome back to everyone returning after the summer break.  We are super excited to be back on campus – with many exciting things happening in the careers space this year.

For those new to the school, Careers are part of the Student Services team at NHS, and consists of Booma (Careers Practitioner) and Lou (VET/Careers Admin.).  We are here to provide information, counselling, curriculum for teachers and run programs which assist students to develop the skills they will need to manage their career journey over their lifetime, in an ever-changing world.

Careers information - and how to find it!

Students should be able to find all the relevant information they need through Microsoft Teams.  They can go to their Year Level team, and then to the Careers channel

There is also a tab for students to make an appointment with Booma here.

Parents need to useCompass to access Careers information or make an appointment directlyCompass:  Go to School Documentation > Careers and Pathways

For news, information and opportunities, the fortnightly newsletter contains general updates and some specific information.  More specific and detailed information is published via a weeklyCareer News bulletin which can be found via Compass> School Documentation> Career News Weekly

All year levels receive targeted careers information via Teams.

Year 10 Work Experience deadline

Late last year we launched our 2023 Work Experience program.  Year 10 students should now be proactively seeking out a placement for the week of 15-19 May.

In Term One students will be using Connect sessions to work on all the requirements to commence their placement.

All documentation is due to be completed in Connect sessions by the end of Term 1.

Careers Expo coming in Term 1

Lots of work has been going on behind the scenes to create a new event for our students in Years 10-12.  We are pleased to advise that we will be holding a Careers Expo on Tuesday 21 March, for students to attend over the course of the day. Stay tuned for more information!

Class of 2022 - off on their next adventures

One of the highlights of my summer is following the journeys of all our school leavers, especially our Year 12 cohort.  The class of 2022 worked through all the challenges over recent years, and we are incredibly proud of their results and the myriad of opportunities that they can now pursue.

There have been 250 offers made to our students to continue onto tertiary study in 2023 (from 253 applications).  Many of our students are stepping into university over the next few weeks. Areas of student include Arts (41), Science/Maths (40), Business (32), Health Services (31), Engineering (23), Creative Arts (19), Law (15), Commication (13), IT (11), Design (10), Education (9), Building and Constructin (8), Medicine (7) and Sports (6).

We also have a number of students who have secured Apprenticeships and will work towards a trade qualification over the next few years.

Most students are working at least part time, and a number of students are working full time whilst taking a GAP Year.

With such an accomplished and well-rounded group of students we have also heard from quite a few students who have been offered scholarships, cadetships and opportunities to study overseas.

There are still three rounds of tertiary offers to come and we look forward to working with the graduates of 2022 over the next month to finalise their transition.
