From the Senior Sports Master

We were very pleased the weather mostly held yesterday for our 2023 Swimming Carnival. The students participated with gusto and everyone supported their houses throughout the day.  The result will be announced at Friday's Sports Assembly and will be published in next week's Woodchatta.  Thank you to all who worked to make the day run smoothly, especially the Year 12 Colour House Captains who led their houses so well.

Mr Matt Stearn - Senior Sports Master

Senior Swimming Squad

After a very successful school carnival our Senior Squad has been chosen and all swimmers who have qualified will be notified during this Friday’s Sports Assembly. Each member will be given a letter outlining what is required of them throughout the season as well as every carnival they are to attend.

Training begins next Monday, 20 February, and continues Tuesday and Friday till March over at Fitness First Chatswood. If you train with a club outside of school three or more times in the week, could you please send a note with your son explaining where they train and how often. Other squad members are required to attend at least two training sessions per week. Sessions are from 7.15 am – 8.15 am and a cap must be worn. No cap….no training.

Our first carnival will be the Christian Brothers carnival on 25 February at Ryde Aquatic Centre. All swimmers are required to attend. More information will be given to those chosen for the squad this Friday at our first swimming meeting after the Sports Assembly.

ISA Round 8 – 1st XI 10/159 defeated St Augustine College 8/158 @ Oxford Falls #1

SPX 1st XI 159 (Joel Austin 65, Manas Bansal 22, Flynn Pavely 21)

St Augustine’s 8 for 158 (Andrew May 2-27, Manas Bansal 2-22)

What a game! A thrilling last ball one run win to the 1st XI at Oxford Falls. With four runs to win off the last ball, the St Augustine’s pair tried to scamper through for three on a ball hit to the outfield. Relay throws from Andrew May to Oliver Freeman on to an outstretched Jesse Mansbridge who effected a run out! At 7 for 88, the St Augustine’s chase looked forlorn but a 70 run stand put great pressure on the 1st XI that held its nerve in the last two overs. Captain Joel Austin fought hard for 100 balls to put together another half century in draining conditions. At 3 for 17, he and Manas Bansal steadied the ship, before Joel put together useful partnerships with Tom Lough and Flynn Pavely that resulted in a ‘par’ total being reached. All home team bowlers played a part in restricting the opposition batsmen with Andrew May’s two wickets in three balls significant. Spinners Manas Bansal and Darcy Aylmer were economical in the middle period of the innings and Lachlan Jurcevic bowled an impressive spell. Darcy also featured in a sharp run out with an excellent throw, while Lachlan took two fine catches at mid-wicket. The last ten overs had the crowd cheering each run and dot ball right until the end of a great game of cricket.

Committee Positions

All basketball committee positions will become vacant in 4 weeks.  I will be around to assist with handover whilst my son finishes Year 12.

The basketball committee is important for your sons as it supports the Basketball Program and raises money, via the canteen + other activities, funds that go directly into basketball.

The commitment takes only a few hours per season.  Please email me if you are interested in being involved or would like to be included on a regular information list.

NSTA Tennis

It was so exciting to see one of our biggest groups yet, 88 boys to be exact, start the Term 1 Summer NSTA Tennis competition this weekend. It was also so great to see all the boys representing the College so well in their full tennis uniforms.

The 8.00 am games started with a bang! All boys were enthusiastic and ready to play. It was great to see 16 new Junior School boys play their first games for the College. The presence of the senior boys as mentors and umpires was also fantastic. These boys did an amazing job and I would like to say a big thanks to them for their help: Lucas Halim, Izaac Tan, Lucas Youngman and Aiden Seifert.

In the 10.00 am games, as always, we saw some amazing shots, grit and excellent sportsmanship all round. We had some very great matches played, Lachlan Yu and Lucas Korth, two Junior School boys worked hard to beat Redlands 13 for a 2-1 win. Sebastian Blane, Orlando Domenici and Aiden Dominguez blitzed their matches.

Please make sure that you check the following website to check that your scores have been entered correctly as well as the draw for next week:
