Educación Física y Salud

Prep/Year 1

In the past three weeks, I have welcomed Year 1 and our new prep students to Health and Physical Education.

Like in other subjects, we learned and reviewed our rights as learners and the responsibilities we uphold to enable a safe and positive learning environment in HPE. We discussed why we do physical education in the school, why moving is important and the benefits of regular physical activity and exercise among some others relevant topics. Moreover, we went through the daily routine in outdoor PE lessons, highlighting the use of sunscreen and hats in term 1 and 4.

To enable students to get to know each other and make new connections, we participated in popular Newlands games such as “Semáforo de colores”, “Pulpo” and “Mushroom Tiggy”, which they loved. Year 1 students did an amazing job helping Preps with games rules!

This week, we have started a new learning unit: Correr con equilibrio (Running with balance) where our students will learn to bend and lift knees while running as well as look forward and increase/reduce speed to avoid collisions. We are playing “Aros de Colores”, “Grupos de” and “Carreras de relevos con y sin obstáculos”.We have a clear goal these first few weeks: to build the foundations of running with balance, which is crucial in many exercise activities and sports that our students will practise in the future. And we are doing an incredible job!

2/3

On Specialist Day, like last year, 2/3 cohort remains in house groups. It has been fantastic to see students after summer break and hear how much exercise and physical activity they have been doing!

The first day of HPE, we collaborated to find out which responsibilities we have in HPE as learners though a classroom activity. We discussed the importance of building a solid foundation for learning to happen efficiently and the roles of students and teacher in this process.

On our second class, we put in practice these responsibilities in games that students are familiarised with such as “Octopus” and “Mushroom Tiggy” with some modifications. This helped students focus on building new connections within the house group and increase awareness of the roles and responsibilities they have as learners. During Showtime, we evaluated our actions and behaviours during class and discussed how some of them could be improved to promote safety and a positive and appealing learning environment.

This week we have started a new learning unit: “Correr y esquivar” (Run and dodge). We will learn how to use our arms while running to gain more balance. We will also practise quick change of directions while running through obstacle races and tagging games. These will give us the opportunity to learn different skills to avoid collisions and dodge objects. These basic skills are crucial to learn as they give students access to a broader range of sports and physical activities in the future.

4/5/6

Our Year 4, 5 and 6 students have been extremely excited to get back to school and participate in Health and Physical Education. This year will bring abundant physical activity and movement for our oldest students.

In HPE, we have started the year by reviewing the rights learners have in the school. The right to learn and do as much as we can and The right to feel safe. Through physical activities, we reviewed the responsibilities we have to ensure we are creating a safe and positive environment in our lessons.

Last week, we were delightful to welcome Cheryl-Anne to our PE classes for the following 4 weeks. Cheryl-Anne is part of the Softball Australia Association and is coming to Newlands to help students learn and refine some of the fundamental movement skills such as tirar/lanzar (throwing), coger (catching), batear (striking) and fielding in Softball. Getting exposed and having the opportunity to learn from a former softball player is incredibly beneficial to all students, especially to those who will be part of the Softball team in Interschool Sport Competition Term 1.

For Interschool Sport Competition Term 1 (Softball, Basketball and Bat Tennis), many students participated in sport trials striving for a spot in one of these teams. Congratulations to those kids who have been selected to represent Newlands in this amazing event! Today´s games have been cancelled due to weather conditions. They will start the competition next week! Please see picture below of the competition timetable.
