STEAM

It has been a wonderful seeing familiar faces again after the summer break and meeting our new foundation students. Everyone is keen to get started back into STEAM learning.

F/1

The year one students spent our first week at school brainstorming ways to be responsible STEAM learners using the school values of care, creativity, curiosity and responsibility. When the foundation students joined us in week 3, grade one students modelled appropriate behaviour whilst experiencing hands on STEAM activities. They explored science concepts through books and using magnifying glasses. Students used robots (technology) to draw. They were engineers when building with Lego and constructing with various materials. Students showed their artistic side by creating collages using coloured paper and they used maths to measure the length of objects using unifix blocks.  This week, students began understanding how we use our senses to explore and understand our world. They used their sense of touch to identify objects in feely boxes and musical instruments using the sounds they make. Next week we will use the sense of smell and taste before moving on to sight. This will lead into our unit of work for the rest of the term understanding light in our environment.

2/3

The year 2/3 students spent our first week at school understanding ways to be responsible STEAM learners using the school values of care, creativity, curiosity and responsibility. We put this into practise when we started our Term 1 unit of work all about Heat. Students learned how heat can move from one object to another by holding a piece of ice and noticing it melt from the heat of their hand. They have also been introduced to the fact that heat can be made in a number of ways including friction, electricity and burning. Over the coming weeks, students will conduct experiments to test how effectively different materials take on heat from other sources.

4/5/6

The year 4/5/6 students spent our first week at school understanding ways to be responsible STEAM learners using the school values of care, creativity, curiosity and responsibility. We put this into practise when we started our Term 1 unit of work all about the Earth and Space. Students respectfully argued when they made claims about the movement of the Earth, the Moon and the Sun. This week, students used balls as models to test their claims and collect evidence to prove or disprove them. We will continue to use models to understand the the relative size of planets within our Solar system distance between them.
