Library News

Today, 9th March, 2023 is Australian Reading Hour. It’s a national day dedicated to sharing the joys of books, reading and stories. Everything I love! There are events all over Australia, in schools, libraries and community hubs where people of all ages are spending an hour with colleagues, friends, and classmates reading together, sharing recommendations and talking books. All you have to do is choose any hour of the day to devote to reading and enjoy talking about your stories. Further information can be found at https://australiareads.org.au/australian-reading-hour/

Everyone can read, share and enjoy the wonderful world of books!

LUNCHTIME PROGRAMS

The lunchtime programs commenced last week. Our students have the opportunity to partake in a variety of enjoyable activities such as:

  • Book Bugs (Years Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2) and Rowville Writers (Years 3-6) on Mondays.
  • Chess Champions (Years 3-6) on Tuesdays.
  • Kindness Kids (all Year levels) and STEM Club on Wednesdays.
  • Movie Moments (all Year levels) on Thursdays.
  • Coding Club (Years 3-6) and Building Buddies (Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2) on Fridays.

I encourage our students to try something new, work together, make new friends and most of all - have some fun!

The Kindness Kids

On Wednesday 1 March, 2023 a group of students attended the first ‘Kindness Kids’ lunchtime program for the year. We read a new picture book called The Kindness Club by Kate Bullen-Casanova and Dave Petzold. We discussed what kindness means and wrote a little bit about it. Here is what our students were thinking:

“I have been kind by making people laugh and smile! Having a smile will make other people smile too! I also let my friends have a toy so they feel better!” – Georgia 3B

“Kindness is about letting people play with me.” – Lily 3A

“I show kindness by giving Matilda my playdough.” – Amity 3A

“I show kindness by listening to everybody.” – Matilda 3B

“Kindness means letting people play, including people, and by letting them choose the game” – Jazelle 3B

“I’ve been kind by helping other people, letting them play and making people laugh.” – Mabel 3A

“Kindness is being nice. I am kind because I help my mum.” – Titan 2A

“Kindness is being nice which is being respectful.” – Zoey 2A

“I was kind today because I opened the door for my teacher and I helped set up the badge ceremony.” – Zara 5B

“Kindness is amazing because by being kind you will make people smile”. – Jiya 4A

The world is a better place with a little kindness in it. It’s free and it makes you feel good.  Show a little kindness every day.

SCHOLASTIC BOOKCLUB

The latest edition of Scholastic News – Issue 2 has been distributed this week. There are some great buys like the $3.00 books on the front page. As well as some fun stories with an Easter theme and the regular books in popular series such as Bad Guys, Cat Kid, Dog Man, Minecraft Zombie, Ninja Kid, Where's Wally, Ella and Olivia etc. I also noticed a new book called Messi Rules $12.00 (lots of students are asking me for more soccer books!). There is a lot to choose from. Remember that every purchase enables us to earn rewards which goes towards ordering new books for all of our students to enjoy! It's a win-win situation.

Please contact me if you have any enquiries regarding Scholastic Bookclub. Orders are due by Tuesday 14 March, 2023.

THANK YOU

Thank you to the Cerra Family for your generous donation of books. Many of our students have requested books from the Hey Jack series and Billie B. Mystery series both written by Sally Rippin. The additional Pokemon books and the Ella Diaries series by Meredith Costain are also highly sought after. We thank you also for books by some popular authors such as Mo Willems, Roald Dahl, Magda Szubanski, Duncan Ball, David Walliams and many more. The students at Rowville Primary School will enjoy reading them. We appreciate your substantial donation. Thank you so much.
