From the

Assistant Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

Students at Rowville Primary School are authors who are increasing using the power of writing to influence and inform aspects of everyday school life. I know that Miss Babich’s letterbox often overflows with letters from students with either suggestions of what she should do to make our school even better or expressions of interest to be the vocalist of the birthday song at assembly. I often receive visits from students’ sharing their poems, stories or posters. Last week, I received a visit from Isla-Mae who presented me with a suggestion of how we should further reinforce our school values. She has left me with a poster that has practical examples of our school values in action.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Our Term 1 Parent Teacher Conferences will take place next Wednesday 15 March 3:30pm-7:15pm and Thursday 16 March 3:30pm-5:30pm. I encourage all parents to log on to Compass to make your booking. Parents will have the opportunity to spend 15 minutes discussing their child’s strengths as a learner and progress towards their learning goals. Our specialist teachers are also taking bookings for 10 minute conferences. Please book on Compass  if you would like to meet with our Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Physical Education, STEM, Italian, Kitchen and Garden Environment teachers. Please note: Many of our specialist teachers work part-time so may only be available on one day.

Parent Teacher Conference Tips

Before the Conference

  • Ask your child what they think their teacher is going to tell you.
  • Ask your child if there are any questions, they would like you to ask their teacher.
  • Think about any information you will need to let the teacher know e.g. events that may have an impact on your child’s learning or wellbeing.

During the Conference

  • If you want to know about a specific area of your child's progress let your child's teacher know this at the start.
  • Find out about how your child has settled into their new year level.
  • Find out about your child’s progress and learning goals.
  • Ask about any issues with engagement or effort that need to be discussed.
  • Share with your child’s teacher any information you consider important for them to develop a deeper understanding of your child.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia. Our students in Year 3 and Year 5 will participate in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy assessments. These tests are adaptive online assessments that present a range of questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance allowing them to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. All Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper. Schools have flexibility in their testing schedule, with our school conducting the online assessments from Wednesday 15 - Friday 17 March. Please feel free to make a time with your child’s teacher or me if you have concerns about the impact of these tests on your child.

A reminder that our school photos (including sibling photos) will take place next Friday 17 March. It is important for all students to be in full school uniform. All orders are completed online in the Arthur Reed Photos web shop after the photo day. All students will be issued with a unique image code on/after photo day, so families can register online to view their child’s images when they become available in the web shop.

Kind regards,
