Doubting Thomas

Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” –John 20:29 NLT

All Christians suffer doubt at one time or another. In the Bible, we learn about the apostle Thomas who refuses to believe that Jesus was resurrected and that he appeared to the other apostles. Thomas wanted to see Jesus’ wounds from His death on the Cross and feel them before he would believe.

When Jesus enters a room a week after His resurrection, Thomas is there. Jesus tells Thomas to put his finger in His hands and into His side and stop doubting. Thomas declares in John 20:28 (NLT), “My Lord and my God!” 

God knew Thomas’ weakness, just as He knows ours, but God gives us free will to make our own decisions. He would never force Himself on us. God wants us to decide if we will accept Him as our Savior. We will never have all the answers in this life. Faith is believing what we can’t see.

God’s ways are not our ways. He loves us and sent His Son to take our place so we can spend eternity with Him. He can turn our doubt to belief. When we give Him our heart, we will be able to say, “My Lord and my God,” just as Thomas did.
