Discovery Centre

Curriculum
What a busy week in the Discovery Centre! We started off the week with a bang, racing around our school oval for Cross Country. It was a cold morning but students warmed up fast by using their perseverance and giving their all to finish the race. We were so proud of all students!
In Literacy, students continued to practise writing a recount by writing about their Cross Country adventures. Students focused on writing the sounds they could hear in words, using two finger spaces between words and sitting their letters on a baseline. Students also focused on writing the letters w and v with the help of our trusty Casey the Caterpillar who showed us the shapes to make when forming those letters. In reading groups students explored different types of weather through stories and identified the different types of weather we experience.
In Maths we explored length by comparing objects in our classroom and classifying whether they were shorter or longer. Students discovered that they needed to use a baseline when comparing and measuring different objects. Students were engaged in rotations that explored measuring different objects we find in the real world. Students also practised using informal units such as unifix to measure how long objects were.
We loved exploring length so much that during a play-based learning session students created a long structure out of construction materials, then challenged themselves to identify objects that were shorter and longer than their creation and used unifix blocks to measure its length. As a class we decided that we would break the unifix into smaller 10 piece towers to make it easier to count. Using teamwork we counted the towers all the way to 180!
A highlight of the week was our Buddies session, where we helped show off everything we have been learning in Indigenous Perspectives. We watched a video of an Indigenous musician who played a very interesting instrument... A gum leaf!! Students then joined their buddies to explore the site Wingaru Kids, engaging in different Indigenous games.
We hope everyone has a wonderful week,
The Foundation Team

FD: Ishaan T -
For demonstrating a love of learning in reading groups. You made predictions with peers about your book and did a great job summarising the story you read. Super work Ishaan!
FH: Elliot H -
For demonstrating a love of learning when we explored length. you made sure to park your objects on the baseline when you put them in order from shortest to longest! well done Elliot!
FJ: Emil A -
For demonstrating a love of learning and perseverance when exploring length. You challenged yourself to use unifix blocks and a baseline to find out how long different objects in our classroom were. Great work Emil!
