Independence Centre

Curriculum
Selamat siang!
The Independence Centre began their week by getting up and active with our Cross Country race! It was great to see all students giving their best effort and cheering their peers on from the Senior School. A big congratulations to our representatives who will be attending District Cross Country and representing MPRPS in a few weeks time! A huge thank you to Mrs Butterworth for organising another fantastic sporting event!
In Writing, students started off the week by brainstorming arguments for and against a topic of their choice. Some of the popular topics include “We should be allowed to play games on our iPads during recess and lunch”, “Pokemon cards should be unbanned” and “The country is a better place to live than the city”. Students have worked throughout the week to develop their plan into an engaging introduction with three supporting paragraphs full of persuasive techniques to convince the audience and a conclusion to summarise their arguments. With all the work we have been doing on persuasive texts, parents and carers better be careful on what your child is trying to persuade you with at home!
In Reading, students have been exploring differing points of view of characters within the same story. We read the text ‘Voices in the Park’ and created character profiles looking at the internal and external traits of those characters. Later in the week we looked at some popular fairy tale stories and looked into recreating the title based on a different character's point of view.
In Maths, we continued our unit on Addition and Subtraction with students practising ways to find the difference between two numbers by working on a numberline or using vertical subtraction. Students used their understanding of vertical addition to help structure their equations and their knowledge of place value to work out the answers to the equations. Some students practised ordering their numbers to ensure the smaller number was being subtracted from the larger number while others worked on renaming numbers from the tens and ones columns.
The 3/4 teachers have been excited to see students participating in our weekly homework choice board and sharing what they have been up to with the homework folder on Seesaw. Continue to keep up the great work writing in your diary, completing 5 mathletics tasks and choosing one activity a week from the homework choice board.
In preparation for our Winter Gala Day on the 3rd of June, the 3/4 students are practising the four sports during our 3/4 sport time on Friday. Our sports are Netball, Soccer, AFL 9’s and Tee Ball. Students have placed their preferences on what sport they would like to play. If you are interested and available to come and volunteer on Friday the 14th, 21st and 28th of May between 12:30pm-1:30pm and for our Gala Day on Thursday the 3rd of June please get in contact with your child’s teacher.
Wishing you a lovely week,
Mr Dix, Miss Gasowski, Mrs McCoy, Miss Molloy, Mr O’Connor and Miss Richardson :)
