Tournament of Minds – 2021

Tournament of Minds is a problem-solving competiton (program) for teams of students integrated across Year Levels 7-10. The Tournament's aim is to enhance and develop diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging, creative and competitive environment. It is an extra-curricular program that involves participation outside of our normal school timetable each week for six weeks, after school in Term 3 and at least one weekend to compete at the regional finals held each year in Churchill at Kurnai College in August.

Recent College participation in the 2019/20 program was very successful. There are four disciplines or learning areas that teams compete in: Arts; Literature; STEM and Social Sciences. Students are invited to join the program with a preference for a discipline however teams are formed based on team strengths.

This is presently organised to go ahead in 2021 as normal and students are invited to join a combined team of seven students to compete. This process is facilitated in Term 2 with a student workshop at the school to help new program participants to understand how Tournament works and how much fun it is. Students can sign up at the Library or find out more information by emailing the program coordinator rmuranty@mmcrc.catholic.edu

I encourage students from Years 7-10 to sign up now and be involved, we need eight Year 7 students to join. It is one of the best opportunities in the College to make new friends and extend your learning through experience, creativity as well as striving for excellence with a team!

EXCURSION TO FARM WORLD

On the 26th March, the Year 10 Agricultural Science Students visited Farm World at Lardner Park to experience a wider understanding of Agriculture.  By visiting the many different stall holders, the students were exposed to the many different career options available to them in agriculture and realise that agriculture is not just a farmer sitting on a tractor in a field, but rather an entire industry of support and service providers.

The students enjoyed the day, with some of them eager to climb into the huge tractors and some of the All-Terrain Vehicles.

The supervising staff were very impressed with the way that the students represented the College in a positive and well-mannered fashion.

ASX SCHOOL SHARE MARKET GAME - HUMANITIES NEWS

The MacKillop ASX Traders have continued in their efforts to maximise their portfolio values. We have over 70 syndicates competing in this national competition involving students from Years 7 to 12. Syndicates may be comprised of a single player or between two and four players. The aim is to have the highest portfolio value (cash holdings plus total share value) at the end of the ten weeks in the competition.

There are 21,870 ranked players in Australia & NZ and 6,299 ranked players in Victoria! Angus Halliwell’s overall ranking at time of writing 396 and his ranking for Victoria is 111. The percentage of players in profit (nationally) is 54%, meaning only 54% of all syndicates have a portfolio value is above $50,000.

Humanities classes competing include Years 11 & 12 Economics and Business Management and Year 10 Money & Markets, as well as our VCAL classes for Numeracy.

We determine our Mary MacKillop Top Trader at midday each Friday. The syndicate with the highest portfolio value at this time is declared the MacKillop winner for the week. The senior students led in the first three weeks, but they have been toppled by younger students in the subsequent three weeks.

Congratulations to the following students who are our Weeks 3-6 Top MacKillop ASX Traders:
