CAREERS

Term 2 Careers News

Students at Lilydale High School have been busy over the past few weeks completing numerous career activities.

Students in Year 7 completed their Career Action Plan in Community Time.  Career Action Plans are a planning document whereby students set goals and identify actions to achieve them. A Career Action Plan uses decision-making skills to plan future education and career pathways.  Students accessed their accounts on the Lilydale High School Website to create these documents.

Students in Year 8 completed their Career Action Plans, completed a basic skills and interests assessment on our school Careers website. Some students even began to put together a Resume which they can use in future years to help them secure part time employment.

Year 9 students completed their Morrisby Online Assessment and their Career Action Plans at the end of Term 1. The Morrisby Assessment results are now being explained to students in an individualised Careers interview with an external Career Practitioner.

Year 10 students will shortly be attending a Careers session where they will discuss Work Experience, complete their Career Action Plan and discuss future educational pathways.

Youth Work and Social Work Courses

According to the Good Universities Guide - Youth Worker, Youth workers develop and facilitate programs to work with and support young people either individually or in groups, in order to address social, behavioral, welfare, developmental and protection needs.  They work closely with teachers, social and welfare workers, local authorities, health professionals, refuge workers, parents and, in some instances, the police.

Social workers help people to deal with personal and social problems, either directly or by planning or carrying out programs that benefit groups or communities.  They are interested in challenging the structural barriers that contribute to inequality, discrimination, exploitation, and oppression within communities.

Social workers can specialise in a range of different practice areas such as children and family, youth, violence, and sexual assault, medical and health, child protection, income support, disability, education, aged care, correctional services, family law, youth justice, community legal, psychiatric and general mental health, refugees and migrants, and Indigenous communities.

For the most part, English/EAL is the only VCE prerequisite for the following Youth Work or Social Work degrees at institutions in Victoria:

Do you have what it takes to become an emergency '000' call-taker?

In Victoria, the Emergency Services Telecommunication Authority (ESTA) is Victoria's triple zero service and provides the critical link between the Victorian community and the state's emergency services agencies.

  • Are you motivated to make a vital contribution to the Victorian community?
  • Do you take pride in your work performance?

If you answered ‘yes’ to both these questions, a career as an emergency call-taker could be right for you.

What does a call-taker do?

Call-takers receive and process all emergency calls from the public and other agencies. The purpose of the role is to quickly and accurately process calls for fire, police, ambulance and SES services so that the appropriate response can be provided as effectively as possible.   This this leads to lives being saved, offenders being apprehended, fires being controlled and serious incidents being managed.

What we’re looking for!

ESTA's call-taker roles are unique, challenging and rewarding but not everyone is suited to the role.  Our best call-takers are passionate about their job and are a strong match to the competencies and motivators described in the Applicant Information Kit (below) as these correlate with successful performance in the call-taker role.

There aren’t any mandatory qualifications or work backgrounds as a pre-requisite to applying for these roles.  If you are a strong match with the profile of a call-taker, you may well be our next team member!

Please contact us via email if you have any questions about becoming a call-taker.
