Co-Presidents Report

It is with relief and gratitude that this report is coming to you as we climb out of the COVID shut-down.  We are now able to get together again and can enjoy some normality in our lives. However, we can imagine that for many alumnae, the health, social and financial consequences of this pandemic will continue to cause much pain, suffering and loss in their lives.  We keep all alumnae in our thoughts and wish them courage and perseverance as they work on repairing the damages caused.

Now, more than ever, we can appreciate the significance and importance of Reunions, the raison d’être for our Association.  This year we are going to make up for all the cancelled 2020 reunions by combining the zero- and one-year classes at each event, e.g., the 2010/2011, 1980/81, 1960/61 etc. Each combined reunion will be double in numbers and double in celebration and enjoyment.

After cancelling the Annual High Tea and Mass and postponing the AGM scheduled for May 2020, we are planning an even bigger and better High Tea this year to follow the Mass and 2021 AGM on Sunday 23 May.  Mass at 2pm followed by the High Tea starting at 3pm.  The Classes of 2020, 1950/51, 1960/61 and 1970/71 will be celebrated, as well as all ages of alumnae having an opportunity to catch-up with their class mates.  We plan to celebrate reunions bigger and better and hope you will join us and share the joie de vivre.  Further  information about the High Tea is included in the newsletter.

A belated Cocktail Party celebration for the Class of 2020 and their parents was held on Thursday 4 March, in lieu of their cancelled Afternoon Tea celebration Graduation Party due to COVID-19 restrictions.

On Monday 15 March three Alumnae Teams competed in the School Community Golf Day at the Commonwealth Golf Club. This event is to raise funds for the Foundation but it also provides a most enjoyable day’s golf and after-party.  The winning Alumnae Team was Louise Moodie (1977), Rosemary Kelly (1976) Gen Rawlings (1974)  and Anne Carne (1976)

An Alumnae Association History Timeline is being created in recognition of our Centenary in October 2017.  This work-in-progress highlights inaugural events and significant changes pertaining to the Association since its inception in October 1917. Interestingly, the Association continued to exist throughout the Spanish Flu of 1919, although like us, the face-to-face meetings and events were cancelled or postponed.  One hundred and three years later, the thing that hasn’t changed is that the Association was created to maintain reunion of former students and that remains today.  We look forward to having a draft copy on our website for your perusal very soon, and will be grateful for those with long memories who can let us know of any required corrections, amendments and additions.

Our congratulations to Mrs Adelina Melia Douvos on her appointment as School Principal.  Mrs Melia- Douvos is well-known to so many alumnae and we are delighted that she can now join our Alumnae events in this capacity.  We wish her every  success in her new and challenging role.

The Alumnae Association committee is always keen to have new members who will each bring perspective and insight from their particular era.  If you would like to make an expression of interest, please refer to the notice re Committee nominations.

We look forward to getting together with a record number of alumnae in attendance on Sunday 23 May.
