2021 is as busy as every year in the German department at GNLC. Throughout the year, there are several opportunities to engage in cultural as well as academic activities relating to the German speaking countries.
In Term 1, our Year 10 students welcomed the new Prep students with Zuckertüten (paper cones filled with German welcome presents), as is the tradition in Germany, introducing them to the vibrant language learning culture our College has.
Middle and Senior Year students then showed academic zealousness in taking part in the Education Perfect Languages World Championships, which took place in March. Our students showed language competence in German, where we were placed 1st in Victoria (in the 250 – 500 student category), 3rd in Australia and 4th globally. We are proud to share with you that we came 36th globally out of 1443 schools in languages not taught at our school such as Hindi, Maori, French, Spanish and Arabic. What a fantastic display of independent language learning skills our students demonstrated!
Our students are currently getting ready for the annual Association of German Teachers of Victoria Art and Poetry Competition with students from Prep - Year 5 taking part in this event. We aim to support our students to be similarly successful, as in 2020 we received a total of 13 gold, silver, or bronze medals. Students from Years 4 - 9 will also take part in a state-wide German Poetry Competition. We are positive that our students will keep up the tradition of our successes (8 medals in 2020) in this competition. GNLC’s Shreshta V last year won the title of 3rd best student in the state.
We do thank you for supporting your child in their efforts in German. Being able to learn and speak a language is a life skill that is becoming more and more important.
Danke!
