International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme
Ms Erin Bagot, MYP Coordinator
Since 2018, GNLC has been implementing the IB MYP across Years 6 – 10. The MYP is one of four programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and follows on from the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) which is offered between Prep - Year 5. The MYP acts as a framework that shapes teaching and learning experiences of the Australian Curriculum. To access a broad summary of key elements within the MYP, this link will take you to our IB MYP page on the College website.
The Personal Project is an aspect of the MYP that allows Year 10 students to delve into a long-term project based on a personal interest. While it is not part of any particular subject, it is a unique opportunity for students to:
Due to the independent nature of the Personal Project, the Year 10 students are at various stages of progress. Over the next few editions of The Good News, we will showcase the
progress of students, who volunteered to share their journey through the Personal Project so far.
The results that students receive in the MYP are based on descriptors of performance, rather than percentages or A – E results. When teachers release results on SEQTA, students and parents/caregivers will see a number between 0 – 8 for a criteria that was assessed. It is important to understand that the number alone is not the result; the descriptor that accompanies the number is key to understanding a student’s progress. It may be useful to think of the number as a key or shorthand that represents the result, which is the descriptor.
Example:
Age of student: Year 10
Subject being assessed: Art
Result released on SEQTA: Criteria A, grade of ‘7’
The grade of ‘7’ corresponds to the descriptor below. The feedback released by the teacher should identify why the student achieved a grade of 7 and how the student could reach a grade of 8 next time:
Teachers release a marking rubric with every summative assessment task. These rubrics contain the descriptors for all levels from 0 – 8 that are relevant for the task. Feedback released by teachers on SEQTA corresponds to the marking rubric.
As per the GNLC MYP Assessment Policy, located on this page, grades of NS and NA mean the following:
NS = The student did not make a submission of the assessed work
NA = The student was not assessed for this piece of work due to circumstances communicated with the subject teacher and/or Year Level Coordinator
