TARSIA PUZZLES

Ms Greenwood’s Year 9 ELMS class discovered the intricacies of Tarsia puzzles during the last week of term. A Tarsia puzzle is made from triangular puzzle pieces where each side piece is an answer to a mathematical problem and must be matched on all three sides. In Round 1, students were given the challenging task of putting a puzzle together and, in pairs, most succeeded (some with a little help from other groups).

In Round 2, the students formed groups and created puzzles for each other to complete based on quadratic factorisation and equations. The task provided a different way for students to revise and created some competitiveness amongst the class. One group even through a spanner in the works by labelling all the puzzle pieces out of order… “just to make sure no one was cheating”.

This was a great way to finish off the term on a high note.

MATHS GAME ON ALGEBRA

In Term 1, the Year 10 Maths Methods classes explored Quadratic Equations and Algebra. To consolidate our learning on the last day of Term 1, we played an Algebraic ‘Add and Subtract Game’. In order to convey our understanding, we were instructed to create a chain of algebraic expressions, linking the given questions to the answers, both quickly and accurately in order to gain a competitive edge over the other groups in the class.

We revised our algebraic skills in a fun and engaging way, with a strong sense of teamwork involved. Overall, this activity was a fun way to conclude the term; as well as bring forth a hands-on and collaborative activity to the classroom. We would like to thank Mrs Nayyar for dedicating her time to creating this game in order to assist us in our revision in an enjoyable way.
