Artists at Work

Last week, grade 5 explored Abstract Expressionism by getting outside for some Action Painting! We read the book ‘Action Jackson’ and discussed how Jackson Pollock’s abstract works really challenged the way people viewed art. Next, we went outside with our large paper, paint and pieces of string (no brushes!). There was twisting, swirling, splattering, smudging and smearing! Even a few leaves managed to fly into the paint for some added texture! We got messy, and we had a blast!

Cool fact: Did you know that the Australian Government purchased Jackson Pollock’s ‘Blue Poles’ in 1973 for $1 million and now it’s estimated to be worth over $350 000 000 !

“We could chose colours according to our feelings, and then put the paint down the way we were feeling. For example slapping or being calm”

Isabella 5G

“ It was really satisfying to splatter the paint and to also use our fingers to squish and smear it on the paper!”

Eve 5G

“I really liked getting messy, it wasn’t stressful “

Sophia 5G

“I like Action Painting and how you can express yourself through colour”

Instrumental Lessons

At BBPS, we have a very strong instrumental program thanks to our wonderful teachers. Phil has been working at BBPS for many years teaching piano/keyboard, drums and guitar. We are very lucky to welcome back ex BBPS student Elwood, who will be teaching singing this year. Students have lots of opportunities to perform for others at various school events such as assemblies, Christmas party and end of year soiree. If you are interested in learning an instrument, please contact the teacher directly or see Miss Wickes for more details!
