Basketball

Congratulations to our 13Bs, 15Bs, 15Es, Open-E and Open-G teams who won their Grand Final matches last Saturday. All the games were absolute nail-biters going down to the final seconds. Commiserations to the 17Bs and Open-Ds who unfortunately were defeated in their matches. The Open-D team game went into overtime and then ‘Golden Point’ overtime. Thank you to all the people who have helped out this season, especially all our coaches. Thank you to all our players. This season I have regularly seen a great spirit of sportsmanship that I am proud to a part of. This year we will  be presenting our award winners to the full school Assembly at a Friday morning Sports Assembly. We are planning to ‘Live Stream’ the presentations so that parents can watch from home. This will be done early next term, dates to be announced.  As this event will be live-streamed, if you do not wish your son to be filmed, please email privacy@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au.

NSTA Tennis

Excitement was in the air on Saturday morning as the boys took to the courts to play in their finals & play-offs. Congratulations to all players but especially those teams who made the finals. We had 8 teams who made the finals at 8.00 am:

Thank you once again to our umpires: Alex Vaccher, Tom Fong, Aiden Parsons and Richard Gauci. The umpiring assistance given by all the Senior boys throughout the term has been much appreciated by all.

At 10.00 am, SPX 6 and SPX 9 definitely played the matches of the day. SPX 6 took both their singles matches to a tiebreak, they were both exciting matches. SPX 9 saw Junior boys face off against Senior boys from Redlands. The size difference didn’t deter the Pius boys, they fought a tough battle to win the final. We had 4 teams make the finals in the 10.00 am session:

Thanks must also be given to Mr Garvey, Mr Webster and Mrs Keighery for their help throughout the season.

Mrs Samantha Iwatani - NSTA Convenor

Senior Swimming

The squad competed at the ISA Carnival last Wednesday at SOPAC. It has been one of our most successful seasons by far. The Intermediate Squad members came 3rd in their division and Pius came 5th overall. There were some outstanding performances in the pool from our squad with Personal Bests and personal triumphs. Throughout the day Nicholas Gladen broke three very long-standing 23 year old school records in the 50 Free, Back and Fly and our Senior Medley and Freestyle Relay team consisting of Ben Ferguson, Connor Ryan, Tom Van Dijk and Max Hargreaves broke both school records that stood from 2016. Overall, one of the most successful swimming seasons I have been involved in. Thank you to Mr Stearn, Mr Lynch and Mr Couani for giving up their time to come and assist on the day.

Although the season has stopped for most of the squad till Term 4, the season hasn’t ended for 12 squad members who have gained ISA Representation at the CIS carnival on the 26/27 April. Alex Davies, Ben Ferguson, Nicholas Gladen, Max Hargreaves, Andre and Bohan Johnson, Derek Jung, Aaron Lau, Connor Ryan, Tom Van Dijk, Sebastian Wallace and Jonathon Yang will all be competing for the ISA. This result is outstanding. Details for those students will be released in the coming days as forms will need to be filled out quite quickly.

Congratulations to all member of the Senior Swimming squad on a fantastic season.

Ms Leisa Proc – Swimming Convenor

Cross Country

Cross-Country training will run all term. Join our Senior student leaders and top athletes, Matthew North and Dominic Panozzo, alongside our distance coach, Izzy Thornton-Bott for fun, varied and challenging sessions.

Beauchamp Park, Chatswood from 7.30 am – 8.15 am on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Meet at the Grandstand in comfortable running gear and with a water bottle. You don’t have to aspire to run in the ISA Carnival - all students and abilities welcome.

Mr Greg  Virgona - Cross Country Convenor

CSDA Public Speaking and Debating Competition and SDN Debating Competition

CSDA Public Speaking

Congratulations to Jose Monk, Year 9, who has moved through to the Public Speaking Grand Final event which will be held this Friday March 19. This will be a zoom event run from St Pius X College. Jose completed his speech exploring how Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is a metaphor for the chains that hold us back in life. A friend of Jose is in our Applied Philosophy class and shared our reflections on Plato’s Allegory with Jose: a winning conversation.

CSDA Debating Competition

Training for the above debating competition commences this Friday.  ALL debaters are to come to B10 at 3.15 pm on Friday afternoon.  Coaches will take students to their training rooms and you are expected to attend until 5.00 pm.

The 2021 Debating season has commenced and our training continues:

Week 8 – training Friday 19 March 3.15 pm - 5.00 pm

Week 9 – Senior debaters will all be trained as CSDA Adjudicators during training this Friday - 3.15 pm - 5.00 pm.

This skill will support the Year 12 students moving into coaching roles in 2022 and will support the huge number of senior debates that we will be running during 2021.

Week 10 – training & pre-season ‘Friendly’ Debates (to be confirmed) 3.15 pm - 5.00 pm.

The CSDA Competition commences in Term 2. See the following dates.

Coaches for 2021 are:

Year 7   Joshua Foley (ex SPX student debater who coached in 2020)

Year 8   Ms Leigha Zervakos

Year 9   Leo Lovesy (ex SPX student debater who coached in 2020)

Year 10  Mr Justin Donnelly

Year 11  Luke McManus (ex SPX student debater 1st year coaching)

Year 12  Mr Ryan Balboa

We are so lucky to have ex-students to work as coaches as their experience as debaters is still fresh and the younger students really enjoy contact with our ex-debating “champions”. All of our coaches are also adjudicators which means that their feedback to their teams is timely and specific.

The fee for the CSDA extra-curricular activity is $150.00 which will be included in your Term Two school fees. We keep our fees as low as possible and have funding from the St Pius X College P & F to subsidise the costs of running debating at SPX.

Mrs Michele Waterson - Debating and Public Speaking Convenor
