Literacy

On Tuesday 17th of February, parents from P-2 were invited to attend the Parent Reading Information Night.

I want to acknowledge all the staff who voluntarily attended the Google Meet; it is a testament to the staffs' incredible dedication at St Anthony’s.

Thank you also to all the parents who attended and all the wonderful questions that were asked during the session. As a recap for those who were unable to attend;

The Science of Reading

A vast amount of good quality research exists into the most effective way to teach reading.

The research concludes that children need to be systematically and explicitly taught to decode words and comprehend what they are reading.

To ensure that the way we teach reading at St Anthony’s aligns as closely as possible with the research, a reading, writing, and spelling program is being implemented from P-2. This program has been developed by researchers. It is concerned with the explicit and systematic teaching of phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Home Reading

  • Read to your children as it helps with vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Reading to your child will not ensure that they automatically begin to read.
  • Children need to be taught to 'lift the words off the page.’ We do this through teaching phonics and developing a student’s phonological awareness.
  • Please see below image about what you can do as a parent before, during, and after reading a reader.

Please continue to check the newsletter as this term I will address some of the questions and concerns discussed at the reading night. E.g., books to read with your children, online resources that align with the science of reading.
