On the Junior Music Camp

Junior Music Camp

Three ensembles participated in this year’s Music Camp, totalling 114 students. The ensembles were the Junior Choir, Concert Band and Intermediate Strings. Over the three days that the camp lasted the ensembles made massive progress on pieces new and old.

The second day of camp there was The Amazing Race, consisting of multiple activities in groups that got the students mixed up between ensembles, and year levels. The Amazing Race was a fun and challenging experience that pushed development in teamwork and leadership skills and gave the students a break from the music practice. Some of the activities  included: archery, adventure tunnelling, guiding people through a maze while they were wearing blindfolds and other team initiative games.

At the end of each day the entire group would participate in an activity. On the first night it was trivia but on the second night there were four different activities that we could participate in. These were: World’s Largest Uno Game, Art Attack, Charades and Round the World Ping Pond.

During the practice sessions the ensembles' skills improved greatly, particularly in their dynamic control, balance, rhythmical understanding and ability to sight read music. The practice sessions were fun. They always included the entire ensemble trying not to single out a singular section all of the time. This kept us engaged and active ninety-nine percent of the time.
