Specialists Updates and Celebrations

Messages from our Specialist team (P.E., STEAM, Music and Mandarin)...

P.E.

Prep PE:

Preps have been learning our expectations in PE so that we can stay safe, stay active and have fun! They have been playing various games that help develop important skills such as listening, taking turns, sharing, patience, teamwork and following instructions.

We have also started practicing our sprinting technique and we have some fast Preps!

One of the Preps favourite games is the Traffic Light Game! Students walk when green is called out, stop when red is called out and perform various actions for different colours as the game goes on. Here is a video of Prep A jumping when yellow was called out.

Apologies as the photo didn't upload in the last newsletter. Here is Aaron (Grade 34D) swimming at a super speed! We look forward to our swimming lessons in Term 4!

Ride2School Day:

Ride2School is a nationwide program that enables students to get physically active on their journey to school.

We will be promoting Ride2School throughout the year and have a special celebration towards the end of each term. National Ride2School day is on Friday March 19th (Week 8) and we will be celebrating in the form of an aerobics session out the front of the school at 8:30am.

We will also be handing out a trophy to the classes in Prep – 2 and 3 – 6 that have the best Ride2School data each term.

Basketball uniform and logo competition (Grade 3-6):

Here are some of the many awesome entries we have had for our competition since the mini lockdown a few weeks ago. You have until Friday 19th March to make your final entries. Send them to callum.freel@southmelbourneps.vic.edu.au

STEAM

This week, the Grade 1s and 2s have been learning how to use their emotions to help them to judge unsafe situations when they are online. They watched an episode of "Hector's World" where one of the characters felt unsafe and calmly reported the issue to a trusted adult. They will continue to learn about online safety (or "E-Safety) for the remainder of this term.

Mandarin

The Grade 3/4s have been learning about 4 great ancient China inventions in our Mandarin class. This week we are focusing on learning how to say invention in Chinses as well as write it in Chinese character. We will explore more about “papermaking” and “compass” in the following week.

Music

Mr Paul is still on paternity leave, so Mr Liston Williams has been teaching the students Performing Arts. This week the focus for Grade 5&6 has been on exploring the skills of improvisation where they incorporated the elements of drama by creating sustained characters and contributing to improvised performance work. They did this in a fun way by playing a Theatre Sports game called "Space Jump". This game requires focus and lots of creativity and crazy ideas to make it really fun!
