Secondary News

Mr. Richard Hardy - Dean of Academic Administration

Years 8 to 10 students have submitted their preferences online and the first stage of the timetabling process has begun as we start to develop the lines for each year level that the timetable is based on. We will keep you posted on the timetable’s progress.

Ms. Ruby Chen, the Coordinator of Languages, recently reported some excellent results of students that had recently competed in Chinese Language Competitions. The results were as follows:

  • Isabella Robinson achieved third place in the Chinese Language Teacher’s Association of Queensland (CLTAQ) Chinese Speech Competition in the Year 11 & 12 division.
  • Demi Klocek achieved third place in the 2021 Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition for secondary school students. Competitors ranged in age from 15 -20 years of age. Some contestants may have the chance to participate in the Global Finals. This competition involved a Chinese written exam, a Chinese cultural performance and a Chinese speech with questions asked by judges.
  • Eight students from Clayfield College (two Year 6, one Year 7, one Year 8 and four Year 11 students) participated in the “2021 Modern Language Teachers Association of Queensland MLTAQ” Chinese speech competition at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. The results were:
    • Year 6 Abigail Isobel Walker was awarded second place.
    • Year 6 Do Hee Lee was awarded Highly commended

(There were 39 students in the Year 6 division)

  • Year 7 Tiffany Yan Kiu Lee was awarded second place in the Background Speaker Division
  • Year 8 Meghan Guthrie-Quinn was awarded third place (there were 18 students in the division)
  • Year 11 Kristal Hou was awarded second place (Background speaker division)
  • Year 11 Vivian Au was awarded Highly commended (Background speaker division)

The competition involved students giving a speech and answering questions in Chinese. It was a very tough competition with many schools entering students. We are very proud of the student’s performances and they really let their light shine!

The variety of activities that have been held for Faith Week has provided students with a spiritual boost. The week started with an Open Mic session with singing or those that wanted to share their faith story. Tuesday was a Lunchtime Scavenger Hunt where students had to use their skills and knowledge to solve clues and win prizes. Wednesday saw the whole secondary school come together for a Chapel service and listen to a guest speaker. Thursday is the Ultimate Quiz with some serious goodies on offer for the winning team. Reverend Yarrow will provide a detailed overview of the week in an article in next week’s Collective.

We look forward to Cultural Week next week. This provides students with the opportunity to experience a broad and rich variety of sights, sounds and tastes. This is courtesy of the Creative Arts and Languages Department who are keen to stimulate your senses.

Pastoral Care

As per our correspondence last term, advising families of the framework for behavioural choices for Years 5 to 12, parents will be notified by email when an infringement has been given to a student. Please be assured all staff spend time in the initial stages of this restorative framework allowing students time to repair behaviour before an infringement is given. If you have any questions, please direct them to your child’s Head of Year.
