Selamat siang!

We were so happy to be back face to face for the first four days of term and hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday break! It was lovely to spend Monday morning’s Circle Time, hearing all about the highlights and eventful memories from the two weeks off.

Monday was the first day of the two-week Water Safety Program. You could feel the excitement in the air, as we checked the roll and swimming bags ensuring we had everything before hopping onto the buses and making our way to Aquanation in

Ringwood. We waved to the 3/4s as they finished their lessons and we were soon in the pool showing off our skills before being placed into groups for the next two weeks. Almost immediately after our first sessions, the 5/6 staff were approach by the swimming coordinator and told about the polite and mature behaviour showed by the 5/6 students throughout their first session which was wonderful feedback! We felt extremely proud and they should too. We are hoping the Water Safety Program will commence on Wednesday.

In Writing last week, students began brainstorming and researching for their debating topic to be presented this week. The three topics are: More should be done to prevent overfishing, Male AFL players overpaid and Standardised testing should be used in

primary schools. It was great to see students passionate about their given topic and to hear their insightful opinions whether they were on the Affirmative or Negative team. Throughout the week, students in Teacher Focused sessions learnt about the roles of the three speakers, how to structure their argument using TEEL, how to prepare and structure their rebuttal and finally how to present their debate using gestures and eye contact, just to name a few. We look forward to the debates beginning on Zoom Monday morning and continuing on Tuesday. Students will be recorded and assigned a peer who will give feedback through SeeSaw- watch this space!

In Reading sessions, students were introduced to a range of Semiotic Systems as Multimodal Elements- linguistic, visual, audio, gestural and spatial. We used these elements to analyse and discuss different news editorial cartoons. Students who participated in Teacher Focused groups interpreted and discussed their thoughts and

opinions about the topical images. Teachers were pleasantly surprised with the elaborate conversation’s students were able to have. The other rotational activities for Reading last week were reading First Nations text and complete a Thinking Routine called sentence, word, phrase where students pick out each of those that stand out to them in the text.

In Numeracy sessions, students revisited Area and Perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Depending on their understanding, students chose from three, star tasks to work on applying their knowledge of the different formulas used to solve area and perimeter.

Students worked independently or in partners to access videos for further support and redrew shapes in their Maths books solving for area and perimeter. This week we continue to look at more complex formulas and conversion of measurements as we build our way up to our Rich Assessment Task. And lastly, well done to all the students who worked on the ‘Maths Challenge’ over the past few weeks. We look forward to hearing how you scored, amazing effort by all!

Finally, we were all extremely disappointed to hear about the snap lock down scheduled

to begin Friday. However we know the resilience in the Leadership Centre is strong and we are confident we can continue our learning tasks from the week, online. We would like to thank the families for their support at home and are here for any assistance needed from students and families. For the next two days we will continue beginning our days with a 9am Zoom check in and one task a day to receive teacher feedback as we follow a very similar timetable to the last lock down. As always if you have any questions, celebrations or concerns please contact your classroom teacher.

Terima Kasih and stay safe,

The Leadership Centre Team
