Teaching and Learning

Room 11

Konichiwa! Hola!

If you have seen a new face around school, it's probably me; Ms.Lola V. I'm teaching the 6/7 class in room 11 for the next two terms. I just wanted to say hello and thank you all for making me feel so welcome; staff and students have been so supportive! I have been a teacher for a very very long time and I just love it! I dont have any favourite subjects, but art is fun. I was born in Madrid, Spain so my first language is Spanish and I even worked in a bi-lingual school there for a couple of years which has definitely been one highlight of my career.

I enjoy running and have completed a half marathon for a challenge which I'm really proud of. Running also means I can eat my favourite foods like pizza and chocolate! I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, reading, cooking, bushwalking, painting and going to the cinema. I have four children so I'm a busy mum too and if you look closely at the old school photos next to the office you might see a couple of mini lola's in there, as my two children, Cristina and Saša attended this school many years ago. It's so good to be back! Say hi 🙂

In room 11 Science students learnt about hydraulics. In English we made short recounts, here are a couple of the students work.

In science we learnt about hydraulics. Our task was to create a hydraulic machine. We made a Back-Hoe.

· It must be a machine that is used to build things.

· It must have no more than four syringes in total.

· It must have at least one moveable part in it.

As a group we had to discuss our design and sketch and label our project.

We used wood, syringes, plastic tubing ad a hot glue gun to put it all together It was tricky to put the pieces together but we had a lot of fun. The back-hoe worked as we planned except it wasn’t as complex as the diagram. When making the back-hoe we chose to slightly change it from our diagram. We made these changes, as having to many syringes made it way overcomplicated. We thought this was a good solution because it worked better with less materials. When the normal glue wasn’t strong enough we had to wait a week to use the hot glue guns.

The things our group enjoyed about this project is how we could connect with room 6 and build cool things and have fun.

Sam, Jack, Archie.

For science our task was to design a machine, that can move. Some of the rules were that, it must be a machine that is used to build things, it must have no more than four syringes in total, it must have at least one moveable part in it. I was with Marissa and we choose to do a crane, a crane is used for lifting and moving heavy things and things that you can not move or lift physically. I really enjoyed doing this experiment because we had to do some research and my favourite bit about this was actually making the crane. Room six also helped us and was put into groups and they helped us make the cranes and what the other groups decided to make.

Bailey and Marissa

Our science task was to design and build a machine that uses hydraulics to move. It must be a machine that uses to build things, such as cranes, cherry pickers and excavators. It must have no more than 4 syringes and must have 1 movable part. I decided to do an excavator because it looked fun and interesting. After that, I sketched a design and found the materials I needed. I then begun to build. One of the problems I encountered was it was hard to hold things in place as I was working by myself. I fixed this by asking people to help me. I really liked how I was able to build things independently and I had a lot of fun.

Term 2 Hockey

Room 7,8,9,10 and 12 were invited to participate in coaching clinics from the HHS Hockey Academy Students at the Adelaide University, West Beach Hockey Club. Our students had an absolute ball playing and learning about hockey. the program was planned to run over 4 weeks, but due to wild weather, students only had 2 sessions. Regardless, It was great to see Henley High students developing genuine leadership skills through coaching. The coaches did a magnificent job, thank you Henley HS!

Term 2 Rugby

Late last term WBPS 6/7s entered in the statewide boys and girls tackle rugby carnival. With minimal rugby experience, both teams showed incredible game sense and adaptability to learn and perform in a competition setting.

The Boys started the day against Brighton PS, who have a strong rugby interest. Brighton were physical, fast and were able to break the defence lines. It was a huge learning curve as the boys were determined to improve. The boys went on to tackle and run harder than their opposition, whilst developing their own defensive and attacking strategies. They went on to defeat the next 3 opponents and make it to the semi finals.

The girls looked dominant from the start with thier tenacious tackling in defense and creativity up forward, they were hard to beat. The girls played a brilliant team game to win the ball, and were exciting to watch as they drove to the scoring zone. The girls marched into the semi finals undefeated.

Both teams were challenged in the semi final, they showed grit, determination and the 'never give up' West Beach PS spirit which saw both teams scrape into the Grand Final. The Grandfinals were both tough games with Brighton PS far too experienced in both the girls and boys. Both teams came home with silver medals.

As a teacher, I have never been so inspired by my students as they were physically hurt and tired and continue to get up and go again. I'd like to thank all the students for their efforts and incredible spirit which made me proud to be at West Beach. A huge thank you to Matt Thomson for his expertise in coaching the squads and all the parents who helped out with transport and support.

A big congratulations to Connor Kube and Lara Scutchings who were recognised by NRL and their peers as top performers on the day.

Term 3

Exciting term ahead, here it is in a nutshell. Badminton SA are running a whole school program which our students have been loving so far. 'Sports Match' are doing a series of health and fitness tests for our students to support our physical education curriculum. More school sport coming up once restrictions ease. And.... Sports Day, Friday Week 9. Get excited!

Thanks,
