Curriculum

It was great to see everyone back to school last Wednesday after another bout of remote learning. Students were very eager to reconnect with their peers and settle back into their class routine. Everyone is to be commended for their attitude during remote learning and for displaying resilience throughout.

In Mathematics last week, students completed their Rich Assessment Task in Measurement and Geometry. This was a post-test that will allow teachers to analyse the work to gauge each student’s progress and identify future areas of need in their learning. We will continue to focus on multiplication this week, particularly on the vertical and lattice strategy as well as problems that involve calculating the lowest common multiple and highest common factor. Students also completed Essential Assessment tasks online which will provide teachers with valuable data to determine next steps as well as student groupings.

In Writing, students are currently researching their next debating topic in readiness to present this week. Some of the Round 2 topics include:

  • Uluru should be open to be climbed.
  • Humans should settle (live) on the moon.
  • Japan should’ve postponed these Olympics.

We believe that these topics will enable students to develop strong arguments as they research information and make strong real-world connections. Students have learnt the roles and expectations of each of the speakers as well as the importance of working as a team by sharing ideas and contributing to others. Each debating speech will be videoed to enable students to view and then self-reflect on what they did well and identify areas for future improvement. Throughout the second round of debating there will also be opportunities for peer feedback which is also a very important part of the improvement process.

In Reading and Viewing sessions focused on interpreting and analysing information and ideas within texts.  Students demonstrated their understanding by identifying different multimodal elements within editorial cartoons. The discussions that arose from these observations were valuable and allowed students to listen and build upon other’s ideas. Also, In celebration of NAIDOC Week, students read and analysed a range of texts to help build an understanding of First Nations People and Culture.

To further excite and engage students with their reading, a new Term 3 reading challenge was introduced today. Because the Olympic Games are currently being held in Tokyo the challenge sees students reading books that correspond to track and field events. There is even a team relay challenge where students need to nominate the book that the next person in the relay has to read. This has been a favourite challenge of students in the past and we look forward to seeing new authors and books being discovered as everyone navigates their way around the athletics course.

Last Thursday, students participated in a range of tasks to celebrate Indonesian Day. Activities included playing the strategic game of Congklak, the marble game of Gundu and Gagah, Oranj, Semut which is a variation of Rock, Paper Scissors and creating wonderful wax and dye creations (Batik). Classes also participated in a range of potato sack relays and engaged in mindfulness Indonesian colouring-in. We thank Bu Mundy for overseeing the day as well as Mrs.Gill for supplying the Indonesian traditional clothes.

Last Friday, Year 5/6 students participated in their athletics day and participated in a range of track and field events. This was a great way to end the week and see students challenge themselves as well as encourage others. Our school’s Instagram account was kept busy showcasing the wonderful performances and highlights from the day. We thank Mrs. Butterworth and Mrs. Embery for the overview organisation and running of the program and ensuring that all students had a memorable day. Thank you too to our wonderful parent helpers for assisting on the day.

We look forward to having a full week of learning onsite. We wish everyone a great week!
