SENIOR PE

We have had a busy term 2 in Senior PE!  We had Casey Netball Association visit on Tuesday 9th May, where they took each class through some skills, drills and game play with us.  We learnt and built on our knowledge of the game, especially the rules and positions on court.  We practised our footwork, passing and defence!  We also had AFL Victoria visit where they took us through AFL skills, drills and modified games.  We have practised our handballing, kicking and marking!  This was a great start to our AFL unit in PE.  We have also been working on our Soccer skills of dribbling, gaining and keeping control of the ball and using the inside of our foot to kick to our teammates.

We had 4 students compete at Division Cross Country this week.  A HUGE congratulations to Kody, Dominic, Kael and Cody who all ran a great race and tried their best.  Congratulations to Cody who came 10th and made it through to Regionals.

To finish off the term, Year 6 and some Year 5’s will be competing at Lightning Premiership on Wednesday 7th June, where we play other schools in our District in the sports of AFL, Netball, Soccer or Newcombe.

We also have Train Like a Vixen for Years 3 and 4 on Tuesday 13th June and for Years 5 and 6 on Tuesday 20th June.  This is a really fun day where we go to the State Netball Centre and develop our throwing and catching, attacking and defending, footwork and game play skills!  To finish off Term 2 we have District Athletics on Wednesday 21st June where selected students that made it through from House Athletics will compete in their events against other schools in our District.

JUNIOR PE

The highlight of PE in the Junior school was definitely our Junior Sports Morning which was held at school on our new Basketball courts. All the students got to participate in a number of different activities throughout the morning. They all had a great time, working together in their House teams, while trying new skills and having fun!

ART

There have been a number of amazing projects and activities happening in art this term. It’s been a celebration in art as the NEW art room is up and running and we have left the temporary gym space behind!   Woo Hoo!  Students have been so excited to continue their art learning in our new room.  Some students in Year 5 have participated in a new digital art program this term using specially purchased ipads and Apple pencils just for this program.  They have been learning all about the drawing program ‘Procreate’ and how to use its functions and how to illustrate using digital technology.  The program has been a big hit for them!   Classes in Year 1 to 6 have begun a unit on paper-mache and have been learning about armatures as the foundation of a sculpture.  They are using their skills and imagination to create props for the Whole School Production later this year.   They’ve been making masks of different animals and birds; 3D koalas, kangaroos and meerkats; and the wings of butterflies and bees.  They will also soon be participating in adding paper-mache to a giant giraffe called Jim who will be at our production too.  We look forward to sharing all these wonderful creations with you.

FOUNDATION ART

This term, Foundation students have enjoyed exploring the colourful artworks of Australian collage artist, Pete Cromer.  They have used paint and oil pastels to create textured paper in a stunning array of colours, which they then cut and arranged to assemble these beautiful birds.

MUSIC

This term, Year 3-6 students continue developing their skills to play keyboards.  They rehearsed and practised songs of their choice and performed to the rest of the class. Foundation to Year 2 students were lucky to play the new percussion instruments added to our percussion collection.  Students in Year 1 and 2 have further explored playing xylophones.  Following visuals, they rehearsed and played short songs following the correct time, rhythm, and pitch.  Foundation students were very enthusiastic to create body percussion using their hands, knees and feet following a beat and time of a rhythm.

All preparations are underway for the first public performance of our school choir at the Clyde Shopping Centre next week.  Well done to their efforts and enthusiasm!

Year 3

This term has been extremely busy with the move into our new classrooms.  The Grade 3s have settled in well and have enjoyed creating their new and comfortable learning spaces.

This term, Grade 3s have focused on comprehension skills, by making connections to their own experiences, other texts and the world around them.  They have explored the effect on audiences of techniques, including shot size, vertical camera angle and layout in images.

They have been able to identify how language is used to describe the settings and characters in texts.

In writing, the students have focused on planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their own narratives.  They have explored a variety of different genres, linked with their personal preferences to showcase their writing skills.  The students enjoyed making fairy bread, to then write their own procedural text, instructing their reader the steps to take to successfully make fairy bread.  Linking with reconciliation week, we watched a video on making damper on the campfire, they also broke down the steps to write a detailed procedure, using different verbs and adverbs.

Maths this term has worked a lot on making connections between addition and subtraction. The students have explored a range of strategies, including using a number line, jump strategy, split strategy, vertical and counting up for subtraction.  In statistics and probability, the students have had opportunities to collect data and present their information in picture and bar graphs.  They were able to create graphs on the laptops, using excel.  Finally, the students have created maps of the classroom, to help with designing the layout of furniture to scale.

Education Week

Thank you to the parents who came into our classrooms to celebrate Education Week. The students played a fun game called ‘Animolympics’, where they explore the concept of chance and probability.  The students also had an opportunity to participate in an activity with their buddy class.  They got to listen to a story with their buddy, then complete some activities based on the theme and ideas of the text.
