What's Happening in Junior School English this Term?
Our Year 7 and Year 8 students have come back to school refreshed and ready for a new term at Scoresby Secondary College. Year 7 students spent their term break finishing the novel, Holes by Louis Sachar and have begun to analyse key characters and themes in the text. They are also currently learning how to gather evidence from the text to support an opinion and are doing a fantastic job so far.
Students in Year 8 returned to school at a run, receiving feedback on their drafts of their Fractured Fairy Tale scripts and going straight into the editing and proofreading stage. Their final products were creative and exciting, and focused on the theme of ‘Good and Evil’. This task involved having the student’s ‘fracture’ a traditional Fairy Tale; they could fracture these Fairy Tales by writing from a different perspective, by introducing a modern element, or through combining multiple stories. Please enjoy reading some of their prologues below.
Narrator: Once upon a time, in a land not too far away, there lived a little girl in a red dress and brown silky hair. She went by the name Riding Hood, but most people called her Little Red Riding Hood. She went to the city to find something but stumbled upon a princess. The blonde princess in a blue dress went by the name Cinderella. She was running towards her Prince when he disappeared right in front of her. Where was he going? Little Red Riding Hood must venture the depths of the Fairy Tale land and battle all the monsters with Cinderella if they want to save the prince from whatever he is doing or who he’s with, even if it means they have to get along and learn from each other. Can they save the prince or die trying?

Hen: Once upon a time, there was a hen, my ancestor, who was enchanted to lay eggs of pure gold. This extraordinary ability was passed down through the generations, eventually to me. Soon after, in a cold, faraway land, an evil giant learned of the golden egg laying chickens. Using a magical beanstalk, he came to Earth took me back to his realm. I plan on escaping. The measly Realm of Giants cannot compete with Earth. I want to go on a journey around the world and experience many adventures. I feel it would take a miracle to get back, though. Or the arrival of someone who has a wish for riches would rival that of The Giant…

Narrator: Once upon a time, in a land far away, in a castle with dark and horrible secrets no one can imagine there lives a Queen. The Queen who rules the castle has a dark and scary childhood, only herself could imagine. The beautiful Snow White who is highly respected has a history of corruption and tax evasion, only she and the Queen know about. The princess now threatens the queen to be tortured or give up the crown. The conflict that they have will shock everyone.
