ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) TOOLS
AI tools, such as ChatGPT, can be large language models trained on a dataset of conversational text. They can generate responses that are similar to human responses to various prompts and can be used for a variety of natural language processing tasks, including text completion, conversation simulation, and language translation.
Students can utilise AI tools to enhance their learning in a variety of ways:
- Research Assistance: Students can use AI tools to assist with research by requesting specific information, context, or related topics, which can help them better understand the subject matter and expand their knowledge.
- Writing Assistance: Students can use AI tools to assist with writing assignments, such as essays, research papers, or creative writing pieces. They can also help with generating ideas, structuring thoughts, and paraphrasing sentences to improve the overall quality of the work.
- Language Assistance: AI tools can also be used as language tools to help students improve their grammar, spelling, and vocabulary in written assignments.
While students are encouraged to use AI tools to enhance their learning, it is important that they adhere to the following guidelines:
- AI tools, such as ChatGPT, may be used to assist in the research and writing process, but the final submission must be the student's own work demonstrating their understanding of the subject matter.
- Any information or ideas obtained from AI tools, including ChatGPT, must be properly cited in the final submission.
- Plagiarism, including the submission of work that is not original, will not be tolerated and will result in a mark of zero being awarded for the part of the assessment task that the teacher can identify that it has been copied or plagiarised.
- It is recommended that students verify information generated by AI tools, including ChatGPT, with other sources as they may not always be accurate.
- Students are encouraged to seek assistance from teachers and other academic support resources if they have any questions or concerns about using AI tools or academic integrity.
Teachers may use various methods, including manual review, comparison to online sources, and plagiarism detection tools like Turnitin and ChatGPT itself, to check the originality of the submitted work.
If a teacher suspects that a student's submission is not their own work, they may require the student to validate their knowledge and understanding through another method, such as an in-class assessment.
