Research and Assignments
Do your children need information sources for doing assignments? Don’t forget that the school has a subscription with World Book Online for their digital encyclopaedia. This has three levels of detail in the information from Kids to Advanced level. https://www.worldbookonline.com/wb/Login?ed=wb our login is brigidine and password is library. Mrs Baker is also happy to assist students with searching for great websites for any topic they might be studying.
Themes for Term 2 Library Lessons
This term our Library lessons are linked to what students are learning in their classrooms. Foundation lessons and stories will be linked to the Paddock to Plate theme. The theme of People and Place for Years 1 and 2 will focus on stories about Australia as ‘Our Place’ and the theme for Years 3 and 4 will link to the novel Bushfire, students are reading in class. Our Years 5 and 6 students are taking part in a Global Pen Pal Project with a small school in Pittsfield, New Hampshire in the United States. They are writing letters, sharing a biography of a famous Australian and creating a document which will include a cultural share about Kyabram, Victoria or something unique about Australia that they know about. This real world audience will give students a chance to show their knowledge and skills.
Borrowing to improve reading and literacy skills
“Education provider Gemm Learning says children who have the ability to find the words they want to use are more likely to have a strong self-image, sense of confidence and higher academic standing. Also, well-read kids are more likely to attempt to formulate their thoughts before becoming angry or demonstrative.”

Is your child stressed? Do they need ways to deal with anxiety, worry or anger? Stories can be a fantastic way to deal with the overwhelm that life throws at us all. We are noticing that many students are not borrowing books to read for pleasure and enjoyment. Maybe it’s time to get back to enjoying some quiet time with a book.
Research shows that students who read books they choose because they enjoy it, do better in all areas of their schooling. Being able to read fluently and understand what we are reading is a key skill needed to succeed in our world. Please encourage your children to make the most of their Library visits by borrowing books they can enjoy.
