Year 5/6 Bulletin

Persuasive writing - Modality Words

Writing Trait: Word Choice

Learning Intention:To improve our knowledge of the power and importance of words when writing to persuade.

Learning experience overview:

In the previous lesson the students explored the structure of a debate and the various roles of each member of a debating team.

The students chose topics and focussed on generating ideas and recording them as a group.

This week we revisited ‘modality words’ and the impact they can have when trying to persuade or get a point across.

We generated a list of modality words and then sorted them into 3 groups.

Below is an example of some:

Low Modality (weakest)Medium ModalityHigh Modality (strongest)
  • could
  • couldn't
  • I think
  • possibly
  • sometimes
  • might
  • occasionally
  • maybe
  • frequently
  • likely
  • often
  • should
  • shouldn't
  • would
  • regularly
  • apparently
  • absolutely
  • always
  • certain
  • definitely
  • has to
  • undoubtedly
  • will
  • never
  • must

Students then continued writing and editing their arguments, incorporating what they had learned about modality words, into their debate topic.

Examples of students work:

What you can do now (To continue the learning at home from this experience)
