Foundation  - Year 1/2

We had another very busy week in the F-2 Learning Spaces!

We were very excited to commence our Circus Lessons where we had time and the opportunity to learn different moves and skills. We had the chance to experiment with juggling scarves, devil sticks, poi and hula hoops! We are so excited to continue learning more about Circus moves and we cannot wait to see what this week's sessions bring us.

Check out some pictures of us in action here!

Those of us in Foundation were lucky enough to have a second visit from Fire Ed. We revisited the importance of knowing where a safe meeting place is outside the home. Some ideas we talked about were letter boxes, trees on the nature strip, neighbour's driveway and street signs. We also shared our safe meeting places with the firefighters. As researchers, we learned about what we could do if clothes catch alight - STOP, DROP, COVER & ROLL! We were fortunate enough to have a look at the inside of the fire truck, and we even had a chance to squirt the fire hose! We enjoyed this amazing learning experience!

As mathematicians, those of us in Year 1/2 did some finding out about the concept of time such as days of the week, months and seasons. We made a class calendar and talked about how some months have 31 days, while others have 30 and February has 28! We learned about how to use a calendar and how to locate a day/week before/after. We talked about how seasons last three months of the year and collaborated with each other to put them in order.

Those of us in Foundation were introduced to the language of Subtraction such as ‘less than’, ‘fewer’, ‘one before’, ‘take one away’, ‘minus’ and ‘subtract’. We viewed the story ‘Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons’ where poor Pete just kept losing his buttons! As thinkers, we used this story to inspire our subtraction knowledge by rolling a dice to take away from four buttons to see how many remain. We had lots of fun!

On Friday, 1/2SC facilitated their Whole School Prayer and Assembly in the hall. They did a fantastic job and we were all very proud of them. Well done 1/2SC!

Wishing you all a lovely week ahead,

Foundation to Year Two Team,

Leanne Wenckowski, Alycia Marsico, Stefanie Carriera and Alexandra Phillips.

Jeevan (1/2AP) was fortunate enough to be asked through Auskick to attend and play a halftime match at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Year 3/4

Roll up, Roll Up! Week 5 began with excitement! On Monday the students in  3/4KD participated in their first Circus Lesson. The students were introduced to different circus equipment and skills such as juggling, balancing and using the devil sticks and diabolos. 3/4BP and 3/4GT participated in their circus lesson on Thursday. All of the students certainly had lots of fun! Take a look!

As mathematicians, we continue to explore a range of efficient strategies to solve subtraction problems. This week we looked at the vertical algorithm where we learnt how to rename one ten as ten ones and one hundred as ten tens.

We also explored subtraction as ‘comparison or difference’ and used ‘how many more?’ and ‘how many less?’ to work out the difference between two numbers. Mrs Monaghan taught us an engaging game called ‘Diffy Towers’. Some of the maths used in this game were skip counting, doubles, subtraction, and inverse operation addition. Next week we will begin Multiplication.

As writers, we have continued to explore snapshot writing using different images. We have been learning to become more descriptive in our writing by writing in sensory detail about a moment in time.  See some of our examples below.

This week the 3/4s explored the new ‘Lego Spike Essential’ kit and app in STEM. We all had great fun exploring the ‘Great Adventures’ and ‘Amazing Amusement Park’  programs where we collaborated in pairs to construct and code cars, a pinball machine, mini golf, a light-up tent and even a Ferris wheel.

We look forward to another busy week of wonderful learning.

Year 5/6

Week 5 was an exciting week for our students as they began learning tricks for our upcoming performance of the school Circus. There was lots of excitement, effort and enjoyment as the students learned the tricks; not to mention the enormous smiles and continuous laughter!  The students will be practising circus tricks for a number of weeks and performing for parents, family and the school community in Term 4.

In Religion, we have begun to discuss the new St Fidelis Vision Statement. Students viewed the videos made by all the year levels and the parents and analysed the main themes. The parents spoke about what they thought was great about our school. The videos included asking each year level the following questions:

  • What’s great about St Fidelis?
  • How do we know this is a Catholic school?
  • What strengths/characteristics do you want to have by the time you leave school?
  • St Fidelis is a place where…

The students undertook a Word/Phrase thinking routine to deepen their understanding of our Vision Statement: “INSPIRING AND EMPOWERING THE LEARNERS OF TODAY TO BE THE VOICES THAT SHAPE TOMORROW”.

In the Resilience Project, the students focussed on the concept of Gratitude. They were able to identify small things they are grateful for and considered reasons why it is important to be thankful.  They designed, illustrated and reflected on things that are ‘awesome’ in their life.

In Mathematics, the students have been learning how to draw angles using protractors.  They have been learning to recognise, classify, name and measure various types of triangles. This week, the students will be learning how to solve problems using multiplication. We ask that parents and carers continue to assist their child to practise their timetables.

Have a wonderful week!
