Technology

Food, Textiles, Agriculture, Health and VCAL

Students have made a brilliant start to Term 3 in the Technology learning area.

Year 8 Food Technology

The Year 8s are excited to be doing Food Technology this term. In their first production class students revisited personal hygiene and safety in the kitchen. The focus for this lesson was to develop their knife skills and familiarise themselves with good organisational skills to achieve success in what they made. Students worked collaboratively and presented appetising dishes and enjoyed the challenge of using chopsticks to eat their stir fry. This week students produced stuffed baked potatoes in which they designed their own filling. The potatoes were crispy and soft with a range of flavours. A fabulous start to Food Technology this term, keep it up Year 8’s!

World of Foods – Technology - Foods

Students in Years 9 and 10 have begun their culinary journey around the world. In the first lesson students reflected on Australia’s history and made their own traditional meat pie. This week students travelled to England and prepared Sausages with onion, peas and Yorkshire pudding followed by Sticky Date pudding for dessert. It has been wonderful to see the students so engaged with their learning and I am looking forward to travelling the world through food with them this semester.

Year 4/5/6 Textiles

This term in Textiles students are designing and producing their own softie. It has been wonderful to see students creative abilities in designing their own softie and learning new skills such as making a pattern to cut out their softie design.

Primary Agriculture

This term in Primary Agriculture the Foundation and Year one students planted the seeds they grew in their greenhouse in the primary vegetable garden. Students also enjoyed a visit to the school chickens and feeding them some delicious food scraps from the kitchen and finding some eggs! The Year 2/3 students have been learning about healthy plant and animal food sources and how we can protect our environment. The Year 4/5/6 students will be participating in the Mushrooms in Schools program this term. The students will be having a fun(gi) term!

Ag Report

The Ag room and area are starting to take shape and look a lot more presentable. Thanks to the VCAL and AG elective students for completing the painting inside the Ag room and thanks to the rest of the Ag classes, Hands on Learning group, Kelvin and Nathan for all their efforts in tidying up both inside and outside.

The stock are all looking well due to the students feeding them both silage and hay and rotating them through different paddocks to maintain their condition. The older students have been attempting to work out accurate feed budgets for our ewes, by assessing both the Food on Offer and the energy rating from the silage. Not quite as an easy task as they thought and wow soo much Maths!    A big thank you to Dale McDonnell for giving up some of his time and helping us with his tractor in shifting our silage, while we waited for our forks to be made for the school tractor. The elective students gave all the ewes their pre-lambing drench and vaccination and at present they are lambing very well. (9 lambs so far)

Cattle Club

The Year 7 and 8s are enjoying feeding and learning to lead the new calves at the farm. We purchased three new calves from the Linto family and Lake Wallace Station has kindly loaned us two calves so that we can conduct our Show program. Unfortunately, Cows Create Careers is unavailable this term.  The students have learnt how to catch, halter and lead the calves and so far we are working quite well. We occasionally have calves leading students rather than the other way around!

Cattle Club will run each lunchtime on a Tuesday and starting on the 17th August Mrs Rainsford has kindly volunteered her time to run the club after school, from 3.30 until 4.30pm. This will ensure that the students learn all the correct for procedures for leading the calves. (Not my area of expertise)

Orchard

In the orchard we have been preparing the area for our new shade structure. We have removed old posts/rails, wire etc and dug new holes to transplant any of the trees that may fall outside our new structure area. The students have generally done a great job getting these jobs done and it will a great reward if the transplanting is a success.

Vegie Patch

The Year 7's and Garden club have been planting and maintaining the wicking beds and some new garden beds. Most of our plantings have been quite successful and some have even been harvested. The students will continue to work in this area regularly and hopefully by Springtime they will have an excellent Harvest basket to display at the Edenhope Show.

Here’s looking forward to some more sunshine, rain and lots of grass growing,

Cheers Mrs Francis
